The year is 1934. Dimitri is in school and he has a regular student life. He's not the best at any subject, but he's not the worst either. He may struggle with some of them, however he manages to pass all his exams.
His favorite activity is to visit his grandparents, for they would tell him lots and lots of stories. At times he was asking them to repeat some of them, so he could remember. His dream was to write them all and share them with other kids. He thought those stories were the best.
Years have past. His grandfather had passed away, and only his grandmother was left alone in a big house. Dimitri and his parents had to move in with his grandmother, due to the war and all. Luckily her house was big enough so they wouldn't feel crowded.
Now a university student, Dimitri was studying things that didn't capture his interest at all, because all he did was trying to write down the stories he heard from his grandparents. His room was a mess since the floor was always covered in crumpled papers. Whenever he couldn't remember a story, he would run to his grandmother and ask her about it.
However, life has its course, and all living creatures die. This happened to his grandmother as well. Luckily, it was the last summer break of his student life. He was, of course, devastated when it happened. He couldn't even write anymore because of it.
Things continued for about a month and a half. Dimitri's pain was finally fading away. His parents had wanted to go through the old lady's things, and give or throw them away. Of course, they were met with a fierce opposition from their son. Now, as his feelings were starting to calm, he started to look through her things. In a way, he wanted to know her better.
In one of the closets, he found a nicely wrapped box. He opened it and in it he discovered a few items: a small blue toy bird, a key, 2 small bottles, an old ticket to some ball it seems, and a little sachet. He was puzzled as to what these represented, and he thought that they must have meant something to his grandmother, or she wouldn't have kept them like that. A small inscription on the doll's belly read "Lizzi", written in cursive. Other than this small treasure, there seemed to be nothing of interest. Unless you consider the generous amount of Red Lumineve Candles stashed away in a storage room.
Dimitri took the treasure to his room and placed it by the window. He would sit at his desk and look out the window thinking of the past. He would see the contents of the box with the corner of his eye. Slowly, as days passed, images and words started to pour in his hand. This didn't happen in some time. He decided to put those images and words on paper because he remembered his dream of sharing beautiful stories with other kids.
One day, even though he wasn't sure of what he's doing or what will happen, he took some of the stories to a publisher. They were a hit! However, his name wasn't - he was advised to take on a pen name. He had about a week to decide on a name, or he would be given one. He didn't really like his name either, especially when he was a kid, and it seemed as if his name was there to torture him. However, as he was thinking of a name, his gaze stopped on the small blue bird. And an idea came to him: he's going to sign his stories as dimitri. - with a lower case "d," a full stop at the end, and no last name. When he went to the publisher to announce his pet name, the publisher thought it was a rather bold and brilliant idea. The new name was adopted as soon as possible on all the manuscripts, and publishing began.
dimitri.'s stories were a success, and his dream finally came true.
