It was the evening of October 31st, just after sunset. A cold breeze blustered through the neighborhood, shaking the dry leaves on the trees until they rustled like a death rattle. Pumpkins carved with ghoulish faces lurked on doorsteps and windowsills, the candles inside them making their eyes flicker evilly.
Beezle made his way slowly but steadily down the street, looking at the houses with a smile on his face. This was the night that struck terror into the hearts of children everywhere and made even adults lock their doors in fear. And tonight, they'd be hiding from him, Beelzebubbles, the most dangerous demon of them all.
Somewhere in the tiny town, church bells struck nine o'clock. As if on cue, children burst forth from the houses, dressed in all sorts of disguises. Beezle couldn't help but let out a cackle; they were disguised to hide from the monsters who prowled the night on All Hallow's Eve! How... sweet.
Beezle made his way towards the closest group of children. A little girl dressed as a witch and two boys, a werewolf and an astronaut, were talking about which house gave out the best candy and whether or not Mrs. Joneston was giving out apples again this year. Beezle chuckled ominously behind them, his features arranging into a demonic grin. The three kids turned to look at him.
"Hey!" the witch said. "I love your costume!" She reached out and tugged on his horns. Beezle's sharp-toothed grin quickly dropped into a frown of surprise as the kids clustered around him, tugging at his tiny batlike wings and poking his bright red skin.
Beezle waved them away. "Leave me alone!" he shouted. "I'm scary, aren't I? Aren't you scared of me?"
The three children looked back and forth between each other. The astronaut flipped up his visor and shrugged. "Not really," he said. "Your costume is really good, though. I like the horns," he added, trying to make amends when he saw Beezle's crestfallen expression. "And the tail."
Beezle stormed away in disgust. He was a demon! He was supposed to be scary! Why wasn't he scary enough to frighten these kids?
