Othniel

Vampire, born and bitten sometime during the reign of Ptolemy II.

Born a Hebrew slave in ancient Egypt, Othniel and his family worked day after day, and hardly ever did they return home for the night without a single lashing. On occasion, they would be sent to the slave markets for richer, higher class people to purchase for themselves. His father and brother were the first to go, being bought by a man looking for strong workers to build a grand temple. His mother was then bought by a woman needing a wet nurse. Lastly were his sisters, being bought by a nobleman who wanted to surprise his daughter with her own personal handmaidens.

One day, Niel was purchased from the slave markets by a shady man, whom had an air of dark intent about him. After a long time spent helping this man care for the temple he lived in, Niel discovered that he was involved in the dark arts; he preformed spells and rituals that would cause harm to others while he himself gained power. Once, after he had witnessed one of those rituals, his master punished him by leaving a scar that would cover his face for the rest of his life. This would only be the first time his master had him within an inch of his life. One day, eager to grant himself power beyond imagination, his master summoned up a being darker than anyone could ever imagine. This creature, this thing demanded blood, and so the unwilling slave was offered as a sacrifice. Niel was only within the creatureâ€™s hold for but a moment, however, before running out into the sunlight. When his master and the creature tried to pursue him, however, they both burned beneath the rays.

While Niel himself remained alive, the bloodlust that had taken over his master and the creature now overtook him as well. He had also discovered, to his amazement, that death from old age would never overtake him. He could live as long as he wanted, with the only price being that of a human life every so often. Years later, the name "vampire" would be used to describe what had taken over him. Niel was also the first vampire to discover the secret to resisting sunlight: mere moments before the venom settled into his body, he had exposed himself to direct sunlight, nulling out the need to stay in constant darkness. He has since wandered aimlessly for a great deal of years, spending his days earning, stealing and fighting his way to the top, making him not only one of the rare few vampires who can resist sunlight, but easily the richest, more so even, than the Briar family, the most influential vampire clan in the world. Despite his wealth, heâ€™s rather miserly, choosing to wear clothes that are torn and filthy as opposed to buying new ones. All the years on Earth have corrupted him into believing in a â€œkill or be killedâ€ lifestyle. His distrust of the world stems from every negative experience he has had with people over the years, therefore leading him to kill all he feeds upon. One evening in Victorian London, however, he foolishly forgot to fully dispose of one specific kill; a young man by the name of Ezra, who had been Niel's choice of prey that night, survived his attack, and now lives on as the unwilling "fledgling" of the sadistic vampire. Neither of them are very impressed with each other, but Niel, being the boy's "maker", knows where Ezra is at all times...and sees this as an advantage whenever he may need money...or food.
