The tale of a bird
"You see, the reason you never catch us is because you're trying to catch us." the grey-clad figure chortled from the roof top at the hapless officer below, now thoroughly entangled in the fire escape ladder. The officer glared up at the perpetrator, pausing their flailing efforts to snarl, "What the hell is that supposed to mean?!"
"It means," and the girl in grey sat down, swinging her legs over the edge in complete confidence, "That you don't understand the difference between fight and flight."
She peered down at the officer some twenty feet below her, eying up the situation like a child would a puzzle. It was something of a strange one for the average layman, a you girl dressed in grey hanging precariously off the side of a building while the police officer who had been in hot pursuit now found himself wedged between the fire escape ladder and the balcony railing. But this wasn't unusual at all for Mockingbird, she was well-familiar with being chased; nor was the inevitable failure of the police to apprehend her anything new. Despite having repeated this process already at least half a dozen times in the previous month, there was no malice in her tone or expression. "You cops only know how to fight. That's all you ever do - fight fight fight. But that isn't the answer to everything - you know, you can only win a fight when there's a fight to be had."
"I could kick your ass in a minute!" the officer snapped, glaring balefully up at the girl.
"See there you go not understanding again. You keep choosing the fight."
"POLICE! STOP RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE!"
Mockingbird glanced over her shoulder to see a second officer busting through the stairwell exit onto the roof. She looked back down in the direction of the entangled officer she had been conversing with, and smirked, "One of these days you guys will understand that we're free runners. We will always choose flight over fight." She pulled her feet up then, so that she was in a crouch on the edge of the building.
"Don't move! Stay right where you are!" came another warning shout from the officer behind her, approaching across the roof top.
"And until you do the same, you will never catch us."
With that last sentence, she jumped forward, off the ledge of the building and plummeted down. Mockingbird spun in the air as she dropped, waving to the entangled officer as she fell past him. One more neat front flip and her feet touched the roof of the building across the alley, and ducked into a neat roll before coming back up to her feet in a run across that roof top to its far edge, leaping off of it as though it were of no concern at all as she once again dropped out of sight.
The second officer reached the edge of the higher roof top and looked down, seeing the first still struggling to free himself. "Did you see that?"
