Darla is one of many trophy wives locked away in ritzy mansions, but there's something about her that makes her one of a kind. Perhaps it's the strong jaw, the adroit eyes -- but whatever it is, it's hard not to envy beautiful Darla, who manages her community's events and her family with almost freakish precision. Her son is silent but charming, and her flirtatious husband is kept perfectly in line.
But, as with any other story, there is more than one might guess. Behind closed doors, elegant and perfect Darla transforms. Her household, full of heirlooms and priceless treasures, is kept in flawless order; not one thing is awry, at any hour of the day or the night.
How could it not be? She is almost hawkish, and you can tell -- her eyes glaze over with obsession and possessiveness, her mouth tightens in rage with the slightest mistake and even her husband is not safe then.
She can't be blamed for being so possessive of what she has; her husband's chateaus and manors are all she has left after having lost her future.
Once, Darla was a lovely young woman, even lovelier than she is now -- for once, she was lively. The cold and sculpted face moved in every imaginable expression, and boys fell in love with that, but only one mattered to her. He urged her to leave school to marry him, and she did, married him young with that laughter flowing wild in her heart.
After a string of countless affairs, Darla's laughter has dried and the smile has gone forever. But beneath the blank face, the perfectionist's manner, she still loves her husband -- and so she keeps what she can of him. His son, too much like him in the face but not at all like him in the heart, is tucked away from the world like a precious memory, and every aspect of her husband's life is attended to with the love of a woman who cannot find loves born anew.
If only he cared.
