"How was today's fishing, Coen?" a burly woman asked as a scrawny boy with bright red hair gently pushed open the door and entered the house. A small canvas bag was held in his hands, and he tossed it on the wooden table in the middle of the kitchen. Coen then pulled a chair out and sat in it, his back to his mother.
"Coen?" his mother repeated sternly, and the boy glanced over at his mother.

"I didn't catch anything, mother." he whispered quietly, looking down at the table. His mother's face reddened and she moved so that she was standing in front of her son.

"You are a disappointment, Coen. All of your siblings can catch fish in their sleep like the rest of the village, while all you do is play with that bow and those arrows." she shook her head sadly and went back to cleaning her kitchen. Coen was left in silence, staring down at the wooden table in defeat. His mother was right; he couldn't do any of the fishing that the rest of the village could. He was deathly afraid of water and hated fishing. Most of the time he would leave with a rod and a bag, then go around to the side of the house, stash the rod and bag, then grab his bow and quiver to go to the woods to practice.

Coen quietly got up and walked out of the kitchen, into the hallway and then into the living area. His room was on the second floor and shared with the only sibling that he could stand; Brandon. Brandon didn't care that Coen couldn't fish and actually encouraged his archery while the rest of the family didn't.
He hastily climbed the stairs and walked down the dark hallway towards the door on the end. When he went into the room Brandon was laying on the floor staring absentmindedly up at the ceiling. Coen moved past him to go to their dresser, where he grabbed his backpack from the top and started to stuff it with all of his clothing. Brandon scrambled to his feet and looked down at his brother; he stood a good foot above Coen, and often teased him about it.

"Where are you going, Coen?" Brandon asked, worried.

"Away from here. Maybe to Sandria." Coen mumbled, thinking hard. Sandria was a large village that specialized in hunting with bows, and where travelers would go to compete in archery competitions. He also had a cousin who lived there. If he made it to Sandria safely, then he could stay with his cousin until he made enough money from competitions to buy his own place.

"I can't stop you, Coen. Good luck." Brandon nodded at his brother and moved towards him. Coen moved first, though; he wrapped his arms around his older, taller brother and hugged him. "Bye."

"Bye. I'll send a messenger once I reach Sandria." Coen promised, as he pulled away from his brother. He needed to get going if he wanted to get a good start before dark when the wolves would roam Pandoria. Brandon moved to the side to let Coen leave the room.

Coen exited the room and slipped down the stairs quietly so that his mother wouldn't hear him leaving. Brandon would tell the family what Coen had done, because if he tried to leave with them knowing he wouldn't make it anywhere; they'd tie him down and lock him in the basement for the rest of his life. He then left through the front door and left it open behind him so that they wouldn't hear. All of his siblings were either down at the river or in the house doing something unproductive, so there was nobody around to see him grab his bow and quiver, then disappear into the forest just outside his house.
