Rise of the Valkyr
Ten years ago I was a priestess.I remember the day well. It was not long after my 16th birthday. The cherry blossoms had just begun to bloom outside. Children played in the yard, much too energetic for their scriptures. I was to spend the day in the shrine, praying to the Divine Goddess.
We never expected them. Silent as mice, they struck. A torch flew through the window of the shrine, engulfing the prayer room in flames. Gasping for air, I barely managed to escape. Welcoming me was a pile of my sisters' bodies; blood still spilling from their fresh wounds. Tears poured from my eyes as one by one, the light faded from theirs. I crawled beneath their corpses, not yet ready to face my own death. I wept, ashamed, as our sacred temple burned to the ground.
Five years ago I was a soldier. I remember the day well. After escaping the massacre, I wandered for some time. Eventually, I made my way into a town recruiting for a war. The recruiter told me my eyes were empty, that I had seen death. He claimed fighting this war would end my suffering. Ignorantly I listened, seeking vengeance for my sisters. In seeking their forgiveness, I sought my own demise.
One year ago I stood at death's door. I remember the day well. Four long years, the war pressed on, neither side showing signs of retreating. I stood alone, my entire troop wiped out. Blood dripped from my abdomen as I mindlessly slew enemies. After some time, I eventually fell from fatigue and blood loss. Staring up towards the sky, I taunted death. "Take me," I shouted, begging for an end to come to my misery.
Today I stand as one of the Valkyr. The Goddess showed mercy upon my damned soul. As I laid on that broken field, I felt her warm grasp. She held me tight, whispering promises of salvation. I allowed her to take me, my mortal body left to rot on that forsaken field.
She offered me redemption with open arms. Before her stood my sisters, now the keepers of out Goddess's kingdom. They bowed to me, proud of me for attempting to avenge them. I accepted her kind offer, proud to stand within Her hall.
I now serve as Her sword and shield, my sisters joining me in arms. We are the Valkyr, and you will remember this day well.
