On a futuristic world, every member of society is issued a unique ID number at the time of their birth. As far as the government is concerned, this is a person's one and only designation, and the higher classes agree; however, some youths in the lower classes have taken to giving themselves “names†- as was the custom in the far past - as a way to express their individuality.

27690 was born into a family on the edge of the classes, better off than the majority of the population, yet still scorned by the social elite. His father died when 27690 was young, crushed when the safety features on an experimental machine failed. He grew up with his mother, silently looking on as she constantly attempted to ingratiate herself with her social superiors, hoping to win a place for her son in high society. As the years went by though, and she made no progress in her goal, he continued to watch helplessly as she wore herself down, coming home each day exhausted and drained. She died when he was on the brink of adulthood.
27690 found himself bitter towards the higher classes, seeing their contempt and rejection of his mother - their inability to view anyone in a lesser class as anything more than scum - as responsible for her decline in health and eventual death.
During the following years he nursed that resentment, quietly rebelling however he could. He started by simply defacing public buildings and statues in areas that high society frequented, along with the extravagant homes of the rich. Gradually he grew bolder when the authorities failed to catch him and, as he had always held an attraction to all forms of lock-picking, started breaking into summer homes of the higher classes when they weren't in use and taking the most valuable items he could find and carry. At some point in this process, he thought to give himself a name like he'd heard a group of commoners doing, and he chose Robin Hood, after the outlaw of legend, and started leaving it as a signature wherever he struck.
He fancied himself quite similar to the folk hero, and to keep with the tales he would leave his appropriated trinkets in alleys and on doorsteps in the poorer districts for the lower classes to find. However, it wasn't too long before the authorities discovered this, arresting a glassblower found to be in possession of a stolen ivory figurine.
When Robin heard this, he was incensed. He quickly found which prison the glassworker was in, determined to free him. His glorious breakout plan didn't go as well as he'd hoped though, mostly because he hadn't bothered to think about any details, but somehow he succeeded nonetheless. Immediately afterward he gave the glassblower some of his own money and managed to smuggle him and his family out of the city without further incident.
After that Robin quickly evolved his methods, breaking into luxurious homes and locating their high-security safes and taking the physical currency within, as well as an item or two as a souvenir. (It was also to rub it in a little more, but he did like his rather large collection of oddities he'd gathered.) He would then give the money to families in desperate need of it, being more careful now not to give too much to any one person in an effort to minimize any unwanted attention to them.
Limited word of his actions had already been circulating in both the lower and higher classes before his little prison break stunt, but after that and his ensuing deeds he seemed to explode into people's awareness. “Robin Hood†was suddenly all anyone could talk about; someone was stealing from the elite of society and giving the money to the poor. The government launched an extensive campaign in the lower districts railing against this criminal, urging anyone with information on him to inform the proper authorities at once for a reward.
Days went by without anyone coming forward, then a week. Then “Robin Hood†struck again, and still no one said anything, despite the fact that by then quite a few people in the lower classes had seen Robin while he was dropping off his care packages, as he wasn't particularly concerned that anyone would turn him in, and knew full well who he was.
The authorities were furious at his blatant defiance and redoubled their efforts to catch him, but he continued to elude them.

They have now raised the size of the reward five times since it was first issued, to no avail. No one in the lower districts will betray Robin Hood; he has become quite friendly with a good number of them, inquiring about their families and how they're getting on, and chatting and laughing with a group of other young adults, who have all given themselves names by now as their own form of rebellion. Robin also, on occasion, makes special, low-key “trips†to get medicine for those that need it.
His life is now a constant mixture of peaceful rest and exhilarating action, and he loves every moment.
