A quilt is laid upon the world
of colors red and gold,
a sheet is placed of frosty white,
peace tucked in every fold.
The air is ripe with cinnamon,
woodsmoke and apples tart,
the golden fields of ripened grain,
their richness do impart.
A hunter stands, a shot rings out,
a fallen fox lies still,
Autumn's splendor melts away,
replaced by winter kill.

"ASHLEY" I slightly opened my eyes, carefully listening. "MERDE ASHLEY!", the words echoed through the grande hallway, where Miss was standing. Fully awake I crept off of my delicate lace-decorated cushion. Ashley was my name, of that I was sure, but the other tones that were being thrown around, I couldn't quite interpret correctly.

One paw, two paws touched the shimmery wooden floor as I, without making a sound, made my way to the carpet that lead to the hallway. Finally, after what seemed forever, I came around the corner. First my tiny snout, and eventually my head was visible. She noticed me immediately, she seemed furious. Her long, elegant finger was streched out, I'm not sure why. Next to her laid the lamp I was playing with earlier, though, it didn't seem to be flickering as amusingly as when I had noticed it about an hour ago.

"MERDE ASHLEY!!" I recognised the sounds, the way they were being yelled at me just like before. "I ALREADY TOLD YOU! IF YOU BREAK SOMETHING YOU'LL SLEEP OUTSIDE". She was mad, for sure. I didn't know what to do, Miss came to me, angry and stomping before she grabbed me by my neck. I froze.

With a smack I hit the ground, the stone tiles of the terrace had greeted my snout many times before. The band around my neck was taken off, which I was grateful for. I never understood why it was put on me, after some time I got used to it, but it usually itched all the time. In exchange though, another collar was put around my neck, made from metal oval rings. The backdoor closed with a slam.

It was so quiet here. I had the chance to look at the bushes and trees, they were all so beautiful and I rarely got a chance to admire them. I actually felt at home.

----------

Let me introduce myself. My name's Ashley; I know it's not really a name for a fox, I think so too. But the name was given to me by Miss and since I never really had another name, I call myself that as well.

I've lived in Paris, with Miss, when I still walked the earth. Miss is a young woman, I think she was about thirty human-years old, and she was my owner. Even though I did not grow very old, every day was spent missing my mate.

Miss fed me regularly, early, when the sun was fresh and up, when the sun was at it's highest, and finally when it kissed the horizon. Plenty of food I must say, though, I did not like it very much. It may satisfy dogs on a daily basis, I never had a moment where I'd joyfully empty my food bowl. But it was the only thing I could eat, she never really liked it when I nibbled on a mice or a small bird, it made her angry.

I travelled a lot during my time with her, we've visited many countries, by train or plane. It always seemed as if the countries were next door though, since I always spent the time travelling in a medium-sized cage in a dark room. Feelings of enthusiasm overwhelmed me when my cage was taken out and I was returned to her, I had missed her presence so much.

Miss got a lot of attention when we went on trips, I always got to sit on her arm and watch the people at the parties. This was something I loved to do, especially because most of the people really liked me. They'd carefully stroke my soft fur and give me a delighted look. At these moments Miss was so proud of me, the way she looked at me made me feel great. I really loved her.

Though, there were times Miss was really angry with me. Sometimes I had played with things that apparently aren't meant to be played with. She'd get mad when I tried to dig my own home in the living room or if I'd hide things under the cabinets. Occasionally she'd play chase with me, though when she finally had me she threw me in my cage, I never really fully understood why, but she was my owner, my leader so she must have had a good reason to do this.

Even though I really loved her, I was always aching on the inside. Especially the last few months of my life. I felt something nibbling on deep inside me, I wanted to open the back door myself and just run free in the garden. I wanted to, at last, set my teeth in the neck of the furry white rabbit that always crossed our backyard. I wanted to play with everything I was told not to play with, but I especially longed for him.
