.............................................................

There used to be a beautiful forest. The trees were green, filled with berries and fruits, and the grass was lush with wildflowers.

Then there was a horrible storm. The tree was sliced by lightning and fell, its twisted roots pointed at the sky.

Shortly after, the forest began to die. Leaves fell from trees in the middle of spring, the shrivelled fruit they bore no longer enough to sustain the life that could usually be found there. The grass dried up and died, flowers withered and the creatures who lived there were forced to find more fertile grounds.

Only one living creature remained in the forest; a human man, young, but wise for his years. He watched his home die around him and knew that the heart of the forest had been destroyed in the storm.

He walked for a day and a night until he came across the fallen tree, its gnarled trunk snapped and rotting on the ground. He grabbed a thick branch and snapped it from the trunk.

Back in his shack, he began to carve the wood. He worked slowly and meticulously, each stroke of his knife bringing his creation closer to fruition. After three days of work, it was complete. On his kitchen table stood a wooden puppy as big as his palm, with wide, kind eyes, pointed ears and a bushy tail. It was midnight on the third day when he carried it out under the moon and lay it at the base of the old, broken tree as a tribute.

That night, something magical had happened.

While the rest of the world slept soundly, time seemed to speed onward with renewed vigour in the tiny forest. New grass began to grow around the carved statue, new shoots plowed their way through the dusty earth and opened, their brillant flowers gleamng under the moon. Moss grew over the rotting tree trunk and around it, encasing the small statue and hiding it from view. Lichen crawled over boulders and twigs and funghi sprung from the earth in the cool shadows of shrubs. Above, tired trees shuddered in the wind, leaves sprouting all at once from their seemingly dead branches to dance restlessly in the night.

In its womb of moss, the statue began to glow, sucking the life from the dead tree from which it came. As the forest spirit entered the wooden body, the statue grew until it was the size of a large puppy. When the glowing stopped, the puppy slept peacefully next to the trunk of the dead tree, seemingly undisturbed as flowers began to sprout from its long coat and tangled vines wrapped swiftly around its paws.By morning the forest had begun to resemble the fertile paradise it once was.

.............................................................

Viridian was born near a wooden shack on the edge of a forest. Born is a term used loosely here, but to Viridian, it makes no difference. He has lived in the forest with his master as long as he can remember. In fact, it feels like only yesterday that he awoke next to a dead tree with vines and flowers knotted into his coat as if he had been sleeping for a hundred years. There he had met Aaron, the young man who had become his master, his protector, his family.

The two lived happily in the wooden shack for many, many years. Each day they would walk among the trees, while Aaron would marvel at the beauty of their little world and tell Viridian of the time when the forest had come close to death and how he had found Viridian under the tree and watched the forest come back to life.

Aaron had never told Viridian what had really happened under the tree. In the beginning he had doubted it himself. How could a wooden statue come to life? And more amazingly, bring life back to an entire forest? Maybe it was coindicence that he had found Viridian there and that the carving had gone. However, as Aaron aged he was forced to believe that Viridian was no ordinary puppy. Aside from his uncanny affinity for other forest creatures, even insects, as Aaron's hair greyed and his back became stiff, he noticed that the stark green puppy was as young and energetic as he had been the very first day they had met.

One day Aaron was unable to get out of bed. He was an old man now, with gray hair and requiring the use of a cane to walk. He knew he didn't have much time left, he turned to Viridian, "I'm afraid this is the end, Viri. It is time for you to move on without me. Once I am gone, you will have no recollection of this life that we have shared. Your duty is to the forest, not to me."

"I don't want to forget..." Viridian whimpered, his soft brown eyes fixed upon Aaron's. "I don't need to forget, please..."

"It is for the best, Viridian. You are the guardian of this forest. More than that, you are its spirit. If your heart is broken, the forest will not survive."

Viridian felt tears rolling down his cheeks. "I won't forget you," he said defiantly. "I won't..."

There was a flash of blinding light. And then everything went black.

.............................................................

Viridian woke slowly, enjoying the feel of the winter sun upon his back.

He saw a small .. upon the ground and was inexplicable drawn to it. He sniffed it slowly, turning it over with his paw. Something in his mind seemed to whirr... a memory... but as quickly as the fleeting feeling had come, it was gone again. Somewhere a memory lurked, but for now, it would remain just out of reach. Viridian sighed softly before picking it up gently in his fangs and adding it to the small pile in the tree hollow he called home.
