He was born of the boy's fears, a god of the mind who could see the boy's darkest secrets and trepidations -- and on lucky nights when the boy let his guard down Atalo, the nightmare, would materialize. He loved seeing the fear in the boy's eyes and knowing that the fear was him, that he resided so deep within that sometimes he could even hold the boy's fluttering heart in his hands, always knowing that in the hellish world he'd created, he alone controlled it. The more Quinten fought for control, the more Atalo loved him. They evolved together, each from the necessity to overcome the other -- but the more Quinten hardened himself against his nightmares, the deeper he drove Atalo into himself, to discover what was more horrifying, to play with the most complex emotions suppressed deepest within him. And soon Atalo wanted everything. With half Quin's heart, his "dark soul" could become his pair -- the nightmare becoming half grounded in the physical world as the living counterpart is halfway released into the darkness. For many, it was an option used to become a fighting pair -- to obtain the combined strength to fight off worse beasts than nightmares. For Atalo, it was the only option to finally be with the one he loved above all else. His timing was perfect...for just as his pursuit began, Quinten's heart had been sniffed out by another -- a depraved, monster of a being who was eager to claim it for himself. |
