on a warm western wind and with preposterous cloud creatures gazing down from the sky,

barrabas came to us by sea
and sopped his salty mane directly into the arms of a young child. she'd wished for a sister to play with, but evidently wishing wells and four leaf clovers have ideas of their own. instead, they gave the girl a tazmanian devil of a thing - neither canine nor feline nor normal at all.

greetings sir!

upon closer inspection, the girl realized that barrabas had not come alone. clinging to his tail was a small shelled creature, undoubtedly dredged up from a quiet home on the sea floor. grumpy as he looked, the little nautilus was soon made to feel at home in a pail of warm saltwater and bits of coral for company.

hospitable as always madam

barrabas however, was not as easily satisfied. he ate voraciously all of the treats the girl snuck him from the kitchen that day, and liked nothing more than to chase and be chased. up and down the beach they went, tumbling down sand dunes with barrabas snapping at birds and bugs alike. the summer of barrabas' visit was filled with tea parties and makeovers, races and sandcastles.

it couldn't last forever though. when august came he'd snatch up his ocean creature companion and trot off to the sea until spring brought him back again from his mysterious winter destination.
