"The Depths of the Soul"

Shaquala is a young, sweet girl, with a good head on her shoulders to be sure, but still impressionable. She likes to spend her time doing normal things, working at the bar with her good friend Meg, and her sometimes-weird friend Tom Knight. The girl loves friends and company, especially after losing her family, and jumps at the chance to get to know different people, and help those who have a hard time. She's really sweet and kind, making it easy for her to make friends with all kinds of different folks, and sometimes is too trusting for her own good. Shaq's an activist for helping people in dire need, no matter how dangerous it could be. She's saved four lives this way, to date.

Shaq, normally so upbeat and and positive, is struggling lately with trying to keep a smile on her face, after the deaths of her parents, and many people she cared about, due to a pirate attack. Never having left home before, she's desperate to make anywhere she goes feel more normal by mixing with the locals, to both make her feel more secure, and help her forget why she had to move in the first place. Depression and loneliness are something she has to deal with regularly, but she does a good job of not showing it.

She's head-over-heels for a boy named Maxamise Tom J. Knight, or Max as he likes to be called. She doesn't realize yet what exactly it is that she feels, but she knows for sure that he's the most important person in her life right now, and that he's done more for her than she could ever hope to repay.

Shaquala's recently learned what it has felt like to hate, and to want to kill someone. When faced with pirates who wanted to take Max and put him into slavery, she blacked out with and fought one named Blanka Lavinia, transforming into a very scary, vicious killer. After coming to, Shaq is terrified of this side of her, still not knowing much about her heritage. The worst part of all for her, is the smell of blood she spilled was intoxicating...

Over all, Shaq is a very good and wonderful person with some very harsh problems, and no idea what to do about any of it...

"Tides Past"

(This story is based on roleplays, it starts out real brief, an gets a little more detailed later, so get ready fer a long read!)

Life for young Shaquala started when she was very small, found on the sandy shores of a small old-world fishing village secluded from most of the world. When going out to fish that morning, there was shrill wailing that at first sounded like a wounded animal... But when the fishermen went to investigate, what they found was a baby girl left lying on the beach. Confused, nervous, but feeling sympathetic to the infants plight, they did their best to hush her unnaturally loud cries, an took her back to the village. A couple, coming close to being middle aged, eventually took her in, since they could have no children of their own. Their names were Rose and Drake Belbadin, and they took excellent care of her with all the love and support anyone could ever want from a parent.

They learned about her shapeshifting very early on. Though Shaquala, as the village's somewhat senile but beloved local shaman insisted her name was, never transformed when given a bath... Salt water was a completely different story. Rose had taken her out to the ocean to see her father and the other fishermen off when she was barely two, and stayed there to play for part of the morning since Shaq had never seen the beach until now. They waded into the water, Rose holding her hands to make sure she wouldn't go too far or anything. Shaq, when waist deep, changed. It scared Rose, and she raced her daughter to the village shaman and a small family of wizard-dragons, both of which she begged for help as well as an explanation.
They couldn't reach one. However, they were able to decide she was obviously a creature meant for the ocean, but she did just fine on land. After some time, Shaquala had naturally shifted back when her legs dried, and was her usual self; just scared. They came to the conclusion that it was best to keep her away from the ocean, for safety's sake, and teach her that it was okay to be a little different.
Even though this was all frightful and strange, Rose handled it well, as did Drake. The village, a small settlement of all kinds of strange drifters who chose to settle down, was also understanding and didn't take long to warm up to the child's differences.

---------------

Shaquala grew up into a very kind, friendly girl, who helped out around the village, since she couldn't help with the boats or the fishing. Even after she was encouraged to accept her other form, she was still shy and scared of it, so avoided saltwater as much as possible. That didn't however, stop her from going to the beach to stare at the ocean, since something about it was so beautiful to her. To make her time there more productive, Shaq took to making jewelry out of the shells and anything else she found in the sand.
After a while, strange things started to happen, and strange people made their way to the shore, but only while Shaquala was there. The legends say a spirit of water, kind and gentle, watched over the village and protected the good-willed who sailed. But there was an evil power, an angry spirit of storms that wanted to harm others and helped pirates, and the two were always warring in the water. The shaman had exclaimed that Shaquala was the daughter of the ocean, it's voice and spirit lived in her. Granted, most just smiled and nodded, as the elderly man was known to be half-mad and his magic rarely worked right... But things began to get strange.
In only a few short months, Shaq had saved a spell-weaver dark-drake, Forte Nyarr, who eventually grew to trust the villagers, and settled down there, helping them greatly with his far more modern knowledge and war-talented magic. She also met a merman named Bio, who helped her adjust to her new form, and tried to help her learn about her race, though in the end they were unable to turn up anything more than a very angry, merfolk-eating krakin.
After which, she found herself in a position to save a deathknight named Ixion, who protected her village from bandits as soon as he was well enough to do so, and like Forte, helped lay to rest the suspicions some had about the dark nature of his home-country. Lastly, she met Max, one early morning after a terrible storm. She, like with Forte and Ixion before him, carried him back to her village, though he admittedly was smaller than the aforementioned, and made it easier. Tending to him, she and Max bonded very quickly, and her parents had no qualms about helping the stranded merman.

That afternoon, though, a strange man named “Koi” came looking for the “shark” he had lost, with a black body and green markings... It was no surprise to Shaquala and her family when Max clarified that man was hunting him, after they had tactfully turned the shady figure away. That night, they snuck Max out to the ocean and sent him on his way, to protect him from what they found out were pirates.
Shortly after, the pirates attacked the village, and slaughtered several of the people, Shaquala's parents among them. The pirates had been driven off by the magics of the Shaman, dragon family, and Forte, but only barely, as Koi's crew were just full of surprises... Such as members with strength and speed no one should have.
Shaquala had escaped, sent into the ocean by her mother while her father tried as hard as he could to keep the enemy from giving chase, and died for it.

The girl was lost in the ocean for over a week, barely able to take care of herself, constantly hiding from any and all ships fearfully, and fretting over the fate of her family and village... She hoped that they, and Max, had somehow managed to avoid that horrible man's wrath. When she met Max again, she found out he had returned to her home the morning after the attack, and what he had seen; Her family had been slain, but the pirates were gone, and he could make out the figures in the distance rounding up the dead, their weeping carried on the wind. Max had offered her parents as best a burial as he could, laying the pair side by side in memorial until the villagers could come and take care of them properly, paying his respects.
In light of this, Shaquala cried more than she had in her whole life... Max told her he would take care of her, and that he was sorry, blaming himself for what happened. No future attempts to convince him otherwise had changed his mind, either. Once she was calmed down, Max took her immediately across the sea, traveling until they came to a small alcove in a rock-face not far from a bustling town. Inside that alcove, was an old but charming fisherhouse, which had once belonged to Max and his father, before he had been stolen away by Koi, and turned into a merman.

--------------------

Shaquala stayed there, while Max departed, telling her he would be back after the fishing season was over, not wanting to accidentally get caught by the boats, since he obviously did not have her gift for getting legs when she was on dry land. She stayed at the house, and eventually got a job at a local pub as a waitress, or barmaid, making instant friends with a lovely middle-aged woman named Meg. To her shock, she also found herself befriending a man named Tom, a muscian at the establishment that looked so much like Max, she had trouble making out the differences at first, apart from age.

It didn't take long before Meg ended up revealing to Shaquala that Tom was Max's father, and she had known him since he was a little boy. Though the girl had wanted to keep Max's existence a secret, to be on the safe side incase of Koi and his crew, she couldn't keep quiet to Meg, who obviously still miss him so much. They made plans that, when Max came back, Shaquala would introduce them again, which couldn't have made Meg more happy.

The next morning, Meg had decided very pointedly she was going to buy Shaquala a new, pretty dress, since hers she had since the night her parents died, and was quite the mess, but the only one she owned... While looking at different ones, Meg spotted one she thought would look good on Shaquala, and it did. A man behind her seemed to think so too. When she turned, it was Koi, smiling in an almost too-convincing manner, bragging about the large black shark he had caught, making a gesture to Shaq to stay quiet about him while the shop owner and Meg weren't looking.
After he left, Shaq explains who that was, full to the brim with anger and worry for Max, and wishing she could strangle Koi! Meg instantly ran out of the shop, dead set to find out what was going on, and told Shaq to stay put. After a while, though, she couldn't, and almost as soon as she left, she was grabbed and dragged into an ally.
Fighting like a wildcat, thrashing around in the grip of her capture, she got free, and was about to scream for help, when she saw what she thought was Tom, as he called out for her to wait. However, it wasn't Tom, it was Max! Seeing her confusion at him standing before her on dry land, on two legs of his very own, he explained his curse; One day out of every year, he was granted legs again, but only for a time. So they had to hurry and find Meg, before something bad happened to her...

After a while, Max felt they were being followed, and despite his attempts, he couldn't shake the feeling. Finally, he rounded an ally and waited for the stalker to pursue them so he could get some answers; however, that very person dropped from the roof right above them, having been following them that way almost the whole time! It turned out to be Blanka Lavinia, a vampiress with red fur and a shining for Max, dressed as a fisherboy. She made Max an offer he had no choice but to accept; Go with Blanka to return to Koi, or she would drag them both back, and let the crew have their way with the girl.

Shaquala didn't want to let him go, but Max tried to convince her he wanted her parents dead, so she would cease to object, and just be safe; But that didn't happen how he hoped. Instead of believing him, she blacked out and showed her true nature, and attacked Blanka, without even meaning to. The only think in Shaq's mind, was that their only way out was to take the pirate down.
What she didn't count on, before her rage took her over, was that Koi and his fellows were hot on their trail. It was mere moments before the two were subdued, and smuggled aboard the ship in a heavy crate...
