The chandeliers - were they chandeliers? Sort of a globe made of twigs hanging off the light bulb. Kinda cool. Kinda hip. Kinda really weird. Like the rest of this tea shop. If Starbucks had been furnished by the LoveSac store, it might have come out like this place. So cozy. It even smelled wonderful - heady like herbs but sharp like spices - and man, were these booths comfy! It was just like sinking into a giant marshmallow and using its smaller marshmallow friends for pillows.

“Pavot?” Elaika deftly wrapped the string of the teabag around the spoon and squeezed all the water out into her mug. “Are you still awake?”

“Mmyeah,” she said, stretching. She sat up.

To her left, Elaika and Ophrys were fiddling with their tea, adding things like honey and milk. They were trying very hard to seem grown up about it, but the shop only had the handful of college surrounded by small mountains of textbooks and notebooks and the occasional calculator. They looked rather harried. It wasn’t likely they’d notice a few kids in the corner booth. It wasn’t likely they’d notice if Santa walked in wearing a speedo.

Elaika and Ophrys looked at her, then at each other. Ophrys said, “We should’ve sat outside.”

“Nope,” Pavot said. “Those chairs’re, like, iron. Very uncomfy. And, we couldn’t all sit on this side.”

Ophrys said, giving her friend a mischievous look, “You mean, we couldn’t sit, and you couldn’t sprawl.”

“That, too.” Pavot laid back down, using Elaika’s lap as a pillow. Her lap was warmer than the pillow.

“You comfy now?” Elaika tucked a few stray strands behind Pavot’s ear.

“Yup.”

Ophrys said, “It’s a good thing you didn’t get tea. It’d get cold.”

“Yup. Can I have my biscotti?”

“Sure you can, babe,” Ophrys said, reaching across the table for it. She handed it down to Pavot, who nibbled at it. Above her, Elaika and Ophrys began to worry aloud about test scores, though they certainly had no reason to worry. So Pavot watched the shoes walk past them.

The red Keds that walked toward the door were certainly flamboyant, but they were worn out, as if they’d been so busy for so long they’d forgotten what it meant to relax. But a pair of bright new Converse walked after them, so surely they’d cheer up the red Keds. Maybe they’d even have a few drinks together, and the red Keds would start looking cleaner and newer. Love will do that. It’s the one thing on Earth that suits anyone wearing it. In fact, they might even have a pair of purple slip-ons sometime in the future.

“Pavot.” It sounded like Elaika had said that more than once. “Wake up, babe. We’re finished.”

They stood up, bouncing and scooting out from the booth, and Pavot stopped to wipe biscotti crumbs off everything. Then, they gathered their purses and headed out of the little store. It was time to shop.
