Silvanoshei

(not finished yet)

Silvanoshei’s tale is one of conflict and heartbreak, and even from a babe his life was not easy. His parents were each the ruler of one of the elven nations, Silvanost and Qualinost. They married so that they could bring the nations together despite the mutual hatreds between them, but it didn’t work. The nations were outraged by the marriage, and named the rulers dark elves, they were each exiled. Together they had Silvan –short for Silvanoshei- and brought with them a small army, but they fought daily for their lives, from both elven assassins and ogres. Silvanoshei’s cradle was a shield, his lullabies war chants, and his playground a battlefield. But they couldn’t get into Silvanost, for the nation had erected a magical shield around themselves in their fear of the outside, and nothing could come through, in….or out.

One night a terrible storm swept over the land, tearing trees out of the ground and hurling debris through the air. At first Silvanoshei, a teenager by elven standards, stood watching the rain, the wind whipping his shoulder-length black hair around his handsome face, the lightning reflected in his lavender eyes. But under the cover of the storm, ogres attacked the camp, burning and breaking through the barricade. Desperate, Silvan’s mother sent him to fetch the nearby army of humans, lest they be overrun. Silvan ran off towards the human army, fearing for his mother’s life. Suddenly lightning struck front of him, and he fell and lost consciousness.

When he woke he was almost inhabilitated by pain, several of his ribs and an arm being broken. He looked around and frowned, confused. The plants around him were gray and dying, and he lay in a ravine. He staggered to his feet and tried the make his way to the road but he couldn’t get to it: some invisible wall blocked him. Then Silvan realized – he was inside the shield around Silvanost, something his mother had endeavored to do since her exile. But how?

Suddenly, two elves appeared from the shadows of the forest, staring at him in amazement. Not unexpected, he though wryly. It wasn't every day that you found people falling through supposedly inpenetrable sheilds. Silvan expected them to kill him, but they merely asked who he was, and he repsonded in truth. They were suspicious, and did the Truth Seek on him, which confirmed his identity. Pleased, they journed with him to the capital, telling him why along the way.

Many of the elves had not wanted the magical shield around them, but most had and it had been put up by a powerful elven wizard, Glaucos. At first they had felt safe, but then things started to happen. Everything the shield touched died, and the elves within it were dying of a strange wasting illness, everything wasting away except the Shield Tree, the plant that kept up the shield. It was the color of blood, and only it of all the plants thrived. Every time one would proclaim that they should take it down though, Glaucos would speak of the horrible dangers outside and the elves would cry for the shield to stay up. The kirath, the society the two elves belonged to, hoped that if Silvan was crowned king, he could help take the shield down and bring peace to the Silvanesti.

Apparently word had traveled ahead, for Silvan was greeted by cheering crowds there, and the elven wizard Glaucos met him and greeted him graciously. Surely the two elves had been mistaken, Silvan thought. Glaucous was polite and considerate in every way, not the cruel and calculating elf the two elves had described. Gaucos helped Silvan settle in, and within a few days he had crowned Silvan as king: but for one secret reason. Glaucos thought to make Silvan a puppet, to use him to appease the elves and therefore keep the shield up.

For the first few weeks, things happened in Glaucos’s favor. Silvan was amazed and pleased by his new life. He slept on silk sheets, wore fine clothes, ate the best food, and for once didn’t have to worry about being assassinated during the night. But one day, he noticed that something important was going on, a messenger even dashing to the gates, and he wasn’t being told about it. He was never allowed out of the palace or talk to people. He was given orders and edicts to sign and never allowed to read them. Furious, he decided to allow it no longer.

He strode out of his chambers and down to the place where the messenger had gone, the room where General Konnal and Glaucos planned things. Bursting into the room, Silvan turned to the messenger and ignoring Konnal’s cries, demanded to know what was going on. Apparently, this time a whole army of humans had somehow come through the shield. The army consisted of the Dark Knights, and was led, of all things, by a girl. She was young even by human standards, only eighteen, and all of her soldiers revered her, ready to die for her should she say the word. Coldly beating down Glaucos’s and Konnal’s protests, Silvan outlined a plan to attack the army. He may not have fought with his mothers’ army, but he had attended the meetings where they discussed strategy.

The day of the battle was finished in victory, Silvan and his guards capturing the human army’s mysterious leader, though the actual army escaped into the forests. The girl was kept in a tent for questioning, and Silvan came to see her himself. When he saw her up close he was startled, for her eyes were the color of amber, and her red hair was shaven, only a light down covering her head: and she was perfectly calm. Curious, Silvan asked how she could be so calm. She responded that the One God protected her: and that her name was Mina. Silvan was disbelieving. The gods had left the world after the Chaos War, everyone knew that. But the girl was resolute, and Silvan began to believe her. He questioned her for some time and learned much. Mina had come through the shield……because it had captured her and her army while they slept. Just the way Silvan had come through while he lay unconscious, the shield could not be penetrated by force, but it swallowed up the helpless. Furthermore, the shield was killing the elves because it was draining their life force to sustain itself, and it had been done purposefully. Glaucos, the raiser of the shield, was a dragon by the name of Cyan Bloodbane in the guise of an elf. He hated elves, and was killing them slowly with the shield, reveling in their suffering.

Shocked, Silvan left. Mina was held for some time, and during that, Silvan fell deeply in love with her, though he wasn’t sure if she returned the feeling. Everything about her, from her soft amber eyes to her gentle manner stirred him, and her wished for nothing but a hint of love from her as well, and after a day convinced himself that she did. But soon, Glaucos questioned her and learned that she knew who he really was. Frightened, he fed the counselors stories of her to scare them, and ordered her to be executed. Wary of Mina, they complied. Silvan was furious, but there was nothing he could do, king or not.

At noon the next day, her execution was begun. Elven guards walked her to the stake, where she would be shot with arrows until she died. Pale and feeling sick, Silvan watched as Mina was brought before Konnal, who read out the accusations. But before she was tied to the stake she looked at Glaucos and cried “Hear the words of the One God. Greedy and ambitious, you colluded with my enemies to rob me of what is mine. The penalty is death.” Mina raised her hands towards him and he screamed in fury as the amulet around his neck broke, and he transformed into his true form: a monstrous dragon.

Snarling, Cyan Bloodbane rose into the air to attack, but he was shot down by the elven archers, and crashed into the forest, his great body impaled by the trees. Mina turned to Silvan and murmured for him to follow her. She led him to the garden where the Shield Tree stood. “This tree is killing your people,” she said softly, “but if you kill it, the shield will fall and you will be saved.”

Silvan took her hand and kissed it, then walked to the tree and wrapped his arms around it. The tree writhed like a snake, and Silvan felt himself grow weak, as if the tree would drain him of life before he could kill it. But thinking of Mina, he gave a great heave, and ripped it out of the ground - and the shield disappeared, the once-hazy sun shining brightly. Panting he turned to Mina only to find that she was nowhere to be found.

Silvanoshei stood alone in the garden, watching the heat of the new-made sun wither the tree’s roots. For love of Mina.

Wash away the thoughts inside
That keep my mind away from you.
No more love and no more pride
And thoughts are all I have to do.
Ohhhhhh Remember when it rained.
Felt the ground and looked up high
And called your name.
Ohhhhhh Remember when it rained.
In the darkness I remain.
Tears of hope run down my skin.
Tears for you that will not dry.
They magnify the one within
And let the outside slowly die.
Ohhhhhh Remember when it rained.
I felt the ground and looked up high
And called your name.
Ohhhhhh Remember when it rained.
In the water I remain
