Moiraine Damodred

Moiraine's story begins with her as an Accepted in the White Tower. The White Tower is place where certain women can learn to handle and use the One Power, called channeling. They start as Novices, taught how to hold the Power without it killing them. If they are strong enough in the Power and do not break under the strain, they are raised to Accepted. Here they are taught everything they need to know about the One Power and how to use it, and then they take the final test. If they survive it, they are then raised to Aes Sedai. Aes Sesai are revered and feared throughout the world, some hating them for their arrogance and manipulation, others in awe of them for their power. Aes Sedai usually consider themselves above all others, even kings, and are famous for making kingdoms and thrones dance on their strings.

Anyway, Moiraine was an Accepted where her story takes place. Moiraine was the daughter of high nobleman, and when it was found that she could channel, a grand ball was thrown in celebration before she was sent on her way. She was one of the only people to be raised to Accepted in only three years of being a Novice. Also, having the education expected of a noblewoman, she have been excused many classes.

One day Moiraine was in the the head of the White Tower's study with her friend Siuan, serving the Amyrlin and her advisor tea, when the advisor surged to her feet, eyes wide. To Moiraine's astonishment, the advisor Foretold the Dragon's rebirth, now happening on the slopes of Dragonmount, and fell to the ground, dead.

Moiraine stood frozen. The Dragon Reborn is the man foretold to be the world's last hope to defeat the Dark One who was breaking free. He is the Dragon reborn again, reborn in a new body with a new name, but the Dragon all the same. His rebirth is feared though, for he is also foretold to break the world, and he will be able to channel.

Men are not trained to channel, and those who learn are taken to the Tower and gentled, cut off from the Power forever. They do this because any man who channels will go mad. Before the Breaking, the Dark One was breaking free, and a man named Lews Therin - also known as the Dragon - and his hundred companions set out to seal the Dark One's prison. They succeeded, but the Dark One's counterstroke tainted the male half of the One Power, causing every one of the heroes and male Aes Sedai to go irreversibly mad. In their madness they almost destroyed the world, causing what is now known as the Breaking. Lews Therin, the Dragon, was the last to die, and when he did, a great mountain rose up where he had stood, and was later named Dragonmount. And it was a male channeler, Lews Therin reborn, who was their only hope to stop the Dark One, who was breaking free yet again. Of course, the Dragon Reborn wouldn't know that he could channel, for unless taught to access and handle it, he could use it without knowing, by accident.

A few days later Moiraine took and survived the final test, and was raised to Aes Sedai. Her first thought was to find the Dragon Reborn, to raise and educate him, readying him for the Last Battle, but the Tower had other things in mind.

Recently Laman, king of Cairhein, had died. Moiraine was related to the royal line and the Tower had plans to crown her as Queen. Horrified, Moiraine packed up and fled, to hide from the Tower’s plans as well as to find the Dragon Reborn.

Through the next many months she searched near Dragonmount, asking over newly born children. After some time she came across a Malkieri man named Lan about the age of 26, three years older than herself. At first she disliked him, but within a month took him as her Warder. As her Warder his duty was to protect her, for though Aes Sedai could channel, the channeling tired them and they couldn't defend themselves with a weapon. When she made him her Warder, she bonded him as tradition called for, a thing of the One Power that allowed them to feel each other's emotions and physical condition. Heartened by the company of her new friend and gaurdian, Moiraine continued her search.

For nineteen years afterward they both searched for the Dragon Reborn without success. But one day, her searches led them to a remote town named the Two Rivers. There she wandered around and spotted three unusual young men. One was very tall and unlike the rest of the people, who were dark of hair and eyes, he had red hair and light blue eyes, and his name was Rand. The others were a large burly blacksmith’s apprentice with curly hair, Perrin, and a lanky black-haired prankster, Mat. She handed each of them a coin with a Tracking Ward one it. As long as they carried it she would be able to find them.

That very night, Trollocs, evil creatures created by the Dark One, attacked the town. Moiraine and Lan immediately ran into the streets, Moiraine hurling balls of fire and Lan weilding his sword, dealing out death left and right. With their example, the rest of the villagers helped to drive the creatures back. After the attack she surveyed the burned houses and noticed that the Trollocs had mainly been after the three boys’ homes. One of them was the Dragon Reborn, and somehow, the Dark One had found out.

She quickly gathered them to her and left the Two Rivers, heading for the White Tower. However, on the way she learned that the Eye of the World was in danger. The Eye was a great pool of the pure essence of the male half of the One Power. The Forsaken, channelers serving the Dark One who have been bound for centuries were breaking free too, and they were targeting the pure power so they could use it to break open the Dark One’s prison.

Moiraine made her way to it with Lan and the three boys and fast as possible, and arrived at the Eye to find that two of the Forsaken were already there. Lan ran toward them, drawing his sword, but one of the Forsaken raised a hand and sent Lan crashing against one of the walls bordering the Eye. He hung there for a moment before falling to the ground, unconscious. Using all of her power, Moiraine killed one of the Forsaken and temporarily held the other, shouting for the others to flee. As the others disappeared into the woods the strain of holding the Forsaken became too great and, screaming, she gave way and collapsed.

Soon she revived to see Lan bending over her, looking anxious. He lifted her up and laid her gently onto a makeshift bed beside a tree, ignoring her attempts to Heal the nasty wound on his head, telling her to lie still and rest. After a few minutes Mat and Perrin cautiously ventured back: but Rand did not. Finally he did, and, after some prodding, said that he had killed the Forsaken, but didn’t understand how. Moiraine watched him for a moment, and then was distracted by Lan coming out of the Eye. He was holding the Horn of Valere. The Horn is legendary, meant to call up the dead to fight at the Last Battle, know as Tarmon Gaidon. Amazed, Moiraine asked where he had found it, and Lan said that the pool of the Power was empty, used by someone, and the Horn had been at bottom.

Weary from the ordeal, the group made their way to a nearby town and settled down to rest. As Moiraine rested upon a bed, she thought quietly to herself. She knew who had used the One Power in the Eye of the World, even if he hadn’t meant to or even knew that he had. Rand. She smiled to herself. After years of searching, she had found the Dragon Reborn.
