Short bio: Jonah used to be a priest and an overall devout man. He took his duties within his church very seriously, and he made sure to help as many people as he could. He was the type of man who would give the shirt off his back, or pick up that box of kittens left on the side of the road in the pouring rain. (But, considering he could barely think to take care of himself, he'd hand the kittens over to a more capable, kind soul for care.) Everyone spoke highly of him. His family praised him. But that was before. That was before he saw her--another man's wife. That was before he fell in love with her kindness and smile. That was before he withdrew because he knew what was a sin and what wasn't. That was before the cancer took her so suddenly. That was before he walked into the river with stones in his pockets--he'd read of that somewhere. After? Well, after he was alive. He was abandoned. He was cast out. He had tried to commit the worst sin, and he was punished for it. Everything was punishment. First her and now him.

He wanted to blame the man who had pulled him from the water. But it hadn't been a man. It was an angel. A very powerful one. Jonah half expected some spiel about a divine plan for him, some explanation as to why. Instead he was faced with a scoffing, smirking face and a harsh lesson in reality. Simple chance, no plan, a god that didn't care. He expected the angel to leave him after that...but he stayed. He stayed and watched as Jonah's friends and family left. His health soon followed. That was the final straw for his unwanted guardian. That was when he was dragged--well, flown--to the House because of an ad in the papers. He didn't want to impose. But the Pets welcomed him with open arms...and Gabriel threatened to, "drag his ass back by his thin, puffed tail if he so much as thought about leaving."

So, Jonah stayed. He found a simple job to occupy his distressed mind. He made friends with the resident self-appointed cook. He worked on finding a reason to live again. To his vexation...he thinks he's found it. He ignores Gabriel's knowing smirk.

I scraped my knees while I was praying
And found a demon in my safest haven
Seems like it's getting harder to believe in anything
Than just to get lost in all my selfish thoughts

I wanna know what it'd be like
To find perfection in my pride
To see nothing in the light
But turn it off in all my spite, in all my spite
I'll turn it off
