Judy never felt so good except when she was sleeping"
Judy and the Dream of Horses - Belle and Sebastian
Bored, she tapped her pen on the desk in front of her, trying to recreate the music she'd heard in her dream of the previous night.
"Tum tu tum tu tu tum" she muttered under her breath, but too loud, it seemed. From the next room, a gruff voice, "Come ON Judi, I don't pay you to sit around being musical, I pay you to -" She stopped listening. He was going to try and aggrandise her job, her job that basically entailed being a general lackey to Him In The Next Room. She couldn't remember his name any more, not that it mattered. She didn't care too much for anything in the waking world, she was just living for nighttime, for sleep, for the dreams that were so much more real than this world she was stuck in. She'd often wondered if this was, in fact, the dream world, and the other the real, but she remembered reading somewhere that dreams showed your deepest desires, and how could this be her deepest desire? No, this world was definitely the real one, but at least she had her nightly escape to technicolour. But for now...
"Judi, are you listening to a word I say?"
She looked down. Her pen was still tapping out the beat. She smiled a half-smile and ceased.
"You know what you should do, Judes?" the speaker was her best - nay, only - friend, a small wiry man with dark hair that stood straight upwards, giving people the impression that he was a good few inches taller than he really was. "You should quit your job! Tell Mr Lloyd" - so that was his name! - "where he can shove it!"
"And where do you propose I find another job? I'm unqualified for anything. I'd only be able to get another identical job, for an identical man, in an identical dreary department. It won't solve anything!"
He looked at her oddly. "You could always -" he began, trailing off before he could finish the sentence.
"I could always what?"
"Oh, nothing. Forget I said anything. You're right, I suppose."
What had he been about to suggest? The question haunted Judi as she began her favourite part of the waking day - preparing for sleep. Pulling the shapeless patched black nightdress over her head, she collapsed onto her thin mattress. She closed her eyes, and waited for sleep to consume her and transport her to the magical world of dreams.
