I had heard of the selkies, but never seen one. She was beautiful, her seal-fur coat glimmering in the moonlight.

"I just want to go home," she cried to me.

I could feel her pain, and wept with her.

She was a creature of the land and sea, but now belonged only to the land. Her skin had been stolen by a cruel farmer, and she would never return to her home in the lake.

"A human world is no place for you", I whispered as she laid down next to me.

And so I crept into his house while he was sleeping and stole back her skin. I watched from afar as she returned to the lake, where she belonged.

"Take me with you," I whispered, but we both knew it couldn't be. I returned every night for a year, but she was gone.
