Orchestration nervously straightened his tie while primping backstage. Tonight was his big debut, and the audience was packed full. He had heard from the conductor that the ticket takers were turning people away at the door, lest the fire chief shut the concert down! He had not expected there to be so much interest.
Ever since he was young, Orchestration knew that he wanted to be a concert master and he set his sights high. The Centropolis City Orchestra was the creme de la creme of orchestras in all of Subeta, and he so admired their expertise and professionalism. He hoped to one day be standing in those spotlights.
He studied hard and practiced every day for as long as he could remember; sometimes, when the music was particularly moving, he'd play late into the night until his poor fingers were numb. When he had heard that the Centropolis City Orchestra's concert master was retiring and auditions were open, he had to try out. He played his violin at all hours for all audiences, preparing his audition piece: "Partita in D Minor" by Johann Sebastian Bach. The judges had been so moved by his playing of such an esteemed work, he had been selected to replace the retired concert master.
And tonight was his big debut. The city was abuzz with excitement over the "excellent new talent down at the orchestra," or so he had heard from a chatty group of girls earlier in the day. The finest Subetans were dressed to the nines and were chattering excitedly out in the auditorium.
"Monsieur, you ah not even undeh dze lights, and alheady, you ah sweating!" another violinist that Orchestration vaguely recognized said in her thick accent. "Rhelax, monsieur. You will be brill-eeant." She patted a towel around his face, catching the sweat, before tossing it into the trash and swishing away.
The conductor shouted over the noise that Orchestration didn't quite catch, but he understood the meaning. It was time to go.
He grabbed his violin and led the others on stage. They sat simultaneously as the audience's voices quieted. He stood and led the rest as they tuned their instruments, then sat again, waiting for the conductor to come on stage. He heard, rather than saw, him make his entrance, due to the audience members' respectable applause.
Orchestration vaguely recalled making it through the first three songs. Those weren't what had his stomach flip-flopping. The final piece of the night was "Violin Concerto in D Major" by Beethoven, featuring a solo violinist. Recognized as one of the most brilliant classical pieces featuring the violin, Orchestration hoped he could play it at the level of respect and quality it deserved.
A pair of oboes started off the piece, and he counted beats until it was his time. Picking up his violin and placing the bow on the strings, he waited to join in the swell of the music with the clarinets, oboes, bassoons, horns, timpani, and other strings. About three minutes into the song, he stood to play his solo. His fingers waltzed along the instrument, hitting every note perfectly and precisely.
The audience melted away and he simply lost himself in the pure emotion of the music. When the ending, sadly and quite too quickly, finally came, he set the violin down with a heavy breath and was surprised to make out dim figures in the audience rising to give him him a standing ovation. He eyed the conductor and noticed that the man was gesturing toward Orchestration, causing the applause to rise louder.
He bowed graciously and knew that this was it. This was his moment of glory.
