The legend says that many years past, the flying horse Athenia was seen in the morning sky, flying low over the village of Katos. It was said that Athenia came to eat the heather that grew in abundance in the hedgerows of the nearby fields. After her visit, their crops were bountiful, there were peaceful times and the rivers flowed freely. The ancestors believe she had been sent by the Gods to protect Katos and all the people who lived there.

Every year from then on, the people of Katos would decorate their houses with paper wings and winged horses they had made, and hang heather twigs outside their homes. They hoped to please Athenia, and ensure their village would be blessed for another year. The heather that grew by the fields was tended to all year, to ensure a healthy supply would always be ready for Athenia's visit.

On the morning of their annual celebration, at first light, the villagers would walk down to the fields where Athenia had first been seen by their ancestors. They would carry white feathers to the fields, as a symbol of Athenia's wings. The wings were strewn across the field as an offering to the beautiful winged horse. The tradition still exists to this very day, along with the excitement of seeing the beautiful winged Athenia, and the knowledge that the people of Katos would be safe and protected again.
