We sadly had to say goodbye to Artemis on Saturday, August 1st, 2020. She was beginning to wheeze while breathing and had some light coughs so we immediately took her to the vet for bloodwork and X-rays on Wednesday. They showed a tremendous amount of fog all around her lungs but they couldn't say it was cancer without testing cells. The vet recommended with her age and condition that we just take her home and make her as comfortable as possible, as she would now be on doggy hospice. We were told that we had anywhere from a week to possibly a month left with her. Over the next few days Artemis was getting weaker and weaker, refusing to eat and wanting to hide in all corners of the yard, Bella was keeping her distance, but I wouldn't let her be alone. Saturday morning she staggered over to me from her bed, and placed her heavy head in my lap, asking to come up on the couch. After tapping the back of the cushion (the girls cue that it was okay to come up) she used every ounce of energy left to try to jump up before I even had time to help her up. After delicately hoisting her up on the couch, Artemis curled up next to Bella and her breathing started to slow to almost nothing, this was different than the last days so I knew something was extremely wrong. This was it, the end of our time together. My hands started to quake and my eyes went blurry from tears welling up, and my cheeks were burning, I couldn't even unlock my phone to dial my husband. I started yelling at my phone to call him but it couldn't make out my words. I had to focus long enough to get him on the phone, dial, speaker, please answer please answer. Artemis started to seize on the couch, throwing her head back and outstretching her front paws, her breaths now gasping. My husband finally picked up and I was screaming at him that Artemis wasn't going to make it. Her eyes rolling to the back of her head, and no longer breathing, I began CPR. Kneeling on the floor, pushing on her chest to try to keep her heart beating, wrapped my hands around her muzzle and breathing air into her nose, just enough to see her chest rise, then return to pumping her chest, repeating the two same steps multiple times, apologizing and begging her to stay. She started to seize again but her head didnt have the drastic motion as it did the first time. Her ears began to go cold and her tongue and gums went pale from the lack of blood flow. I had already lost her. I continued CPR but there was no longer any response. I sat back on the floor, defeated. I didnt know what to do, my husband was still 20 minutes away, speeding home from work. I cried into her black fur, stroking her aged silver face. My whole world was shattered and laying lifeless in front of me. 11 years is what we were given with her but it would never have been enough time. We love you so much and we think about you every day Artemis.
