She woke in the middle of the night, not certain if she had heard a noise or if she had been dreaming. She listened for a few moments, but heard nothing. Deciding it had been a dream, she got up and crossed the hall to the bathroom. After using the toilet, she fumbled her way back to her bed.

But something didn't feel right. She wasn't sure what - but something felt different. She reached for the lamp on her bedside table and flicked it on. Eyes darting around the room, taking everything in. Hmm, everything seemed to be in place. She began to relax a little, her breathing slowed to almost normal rate.

Then, as she reached over to switch the lamp off again, she saw it. There, on the bedside table. Her notepad. She kept it there to jot down random poetry lines, as inspiration often struck late at night. Only there were no words of poetry on the open page. There was a scrawled note. It said:

I CAN SEE YOU.

She panicked, her breathing fast again. Glancing round the room, still nothing seemed out of place. Then she froze, a chill went down her neck. The bed. It had to be under the bed! She slowly, very slowly, leaned over the side and lowered herself down to the floor. Just as she reached the bottom, she saw two eyes staring at her. And then it grabbed her, and pulled her under the bed. She tried to scream but nothing would come out.

She struggled and wriggled, trying desperately to get away. Then she felt someone, or something, pulling her from the other side. And voices, she heard voices. "Zara, come on. Zara!! Focus - you must focus!! Look at me!!" She felt something sharp in her arm - had she been bitten? She yelled out, and the voices yelled louder. "Come on Zara, wake up. You are dreaming - we had to give you another shot. WAKE UP!"

Zara woke up screaming, again. The nurses and the doctor looked on, with worried faces. Their voices were blurry but she knew who they were. She felt the stab of a needle in her vein, and she remembered. Hospital, she was in hospital. The secure unit. She began to sob as she remembered everything. They did their best to soothe her, to comfort her - but she knew. She knew that one day - it would take her and there was nothing anyone could do to save her. It was coming for her. It had told her, in the new message scrawled on the notepad by her bed:

I KNOW WHEN YOU SLEEP.

I CAN SEE YOU.

I AM FEAR.
