Our paths crossed when I first began my travels.

He was angry and also a traveller himself - from a place he could no longer return, toward a destination of which he was uncertain of. Although his circumstances were unique, as in, I had never met a human quite like him, I acknowledged Genji with the same air I would acknowledge any troubled soul. He must have sensed my lack of judgement, for despite not uttering a single word, he chose to spend his time in my company.

From that day, wherever my curiosity lead me, Genji was my shadow. His eyes blazed with some untamed ferocity, always watching his environment. Sharp, calculating. He was a killer, or had been trained as one at the very least - that much I could gather from his demeanour and the weapons he possessed. He would regard me with something softer - something hopeful, perhaps.

I did not feel endangered. Mondatta may have said something about that, if he were there to witness it.

It took many weeks for me to finally hear his voice. Being a bit of a chatterbox myself, I would speak to him from the very beginning of our partnership. He would listen, always - he just would not reply. He may have looked thoughtful at times, but he would not voice those thoughts. I did not feel frustrated at his hesitance, for I am a rather patient omnic.

Whatever subject I had chosen to speak of eludes me, but while I was speaking, a voice came to my attention. Softly, quietly, but it had sounded. I looked to Genji, who looked back to me. I encouraged him to say more, but he appeared unsure, vulnerable. I did not press. After that, things continued as they did before.

Months went by and we had travelled to many different places, and I had chatted away about many different things. It was in the lull of the quiet that he finally spoke again. It was more elaborate, louder so that my audio processors could better detect it:

"Thank you."

Although it was scratchy from disuse and somewhat modulated by his cybernetic body, I had finally heard Genji speak. I raised my head in a way that conveyed I was smiling and replied:

"I am proud of you."
