The harbour glimmered with a warm glow this enchanted summer evening. A young man and woman walked down the boardwalk, fingers intertwined. Golden sunlight cast a caressing glow over the couple as the young man lead his lady friend to a beautiful carousel overlooking the flaming sunset.

"Look at that sunset!" the young woman gazed out to where the blazing sun sank slowly into the river, "isn't it magical?"

"It's not a surprise that you think that, especially today," at her quizzical expression, he smiled and continued on, "today's the summer solstice, the longest day of the year." He looked down at the carousel horse he was leaning on and trailed his fingers along the intricately carved tassels.

"...and?"

He continued to trace the lines of the steed, "The summer solstice marks a special day, the day a magical gift was presented from a king to a queen, a long, long time ago...

The realm of the Fae has always been around. Times change, alliances shift, love comes and goes. The stories of these creatures are flung far and wide, over not only countries but over time as well. Amongst these stories, there is one that tells of love, love of the ficklest kind: the love between the Queen of Summer, Titania and the King of Winter, Auberon. Their relationship was like the realms they ruled: filled with fiery passion at one moment, and cold as ice the next.

During a time of deep passion, Auberon presented the Summer Court with an extravagant gift: a carousel of most the exquisite faerie horses the realm had to offer. The carousel gleamed and shimmered, its equine occupants leaped and pranced about, not contained by the carousel but freely moved to the rider's wishes. The Summer Queen was delighted with the beautiful carousel and had it placed in the fields of summer for all to enjoy.

Like the seasons, their relationship came and went. Spurred on by hurt and jealousy, Titania blasted the carousel with a brilliant white fire, binding the twelve faerie horses to their wood prison. In a blinding flash, the beautiful carousel was gone.Over time, the rulers came to a truce and the realms were once again peaceful. However, Winter's gift to Summer was lost and over the centuries, forgotten.

...stories say that when the carousel was blasted away, it was sent to the mortal world. Here, it was no longer the magical creation of the Fae but an ordinary carousel. Some say that every year on the summer solstice, the occupants of the carousel have the chance to roam free again, as a remembrance of the love that once warmed the summer. Others say that it will take lovers' touch to break the spell of heartbreak." the young man stopped speaking as he waited for the reaction of his companion.

There was a long silence before she finally murmured, "you sure know how to tell a good story. You know, at some points, I could almost believe it was real."

He laughed, "I guess I'm just a good story teller! It's getting late, could I walk you home milady?" he gave her an exaggerated bow as he offered a hand to help her down from the carousel.

She smiled at his gallantries, "why of course kind sir." Taking his offered hand, she gracefully leaped down from her perch on a carousel mount and the couple walked into the shadows, their fingers intertwined.

Miriam shuddered from the rush of faerie magic rushing through her veins. She could feel the others' restlessness around her, all eager to finally be free. She shook out her mane and arched her back, dispelling the stiffness that could only come from spending centuries frozen as a wooden sculpture. After all this time, the touch of an enamoured Fae was all that they had needed to be free once again. She leaped from her post, breaking the wooden bonds that restrained her. Love was a powerful magic. Of course, it had helped that this particular Fae was a faerie prince.
