Mefait stumbled lazily across her apartment, searching for the bottle of tequila she knew she had left nearby. Peering around through half-open eyes, she spotted it on the floor, under the coffee table she had made from reclaimed oak.

"There you are..." she said in a quiet, raspy voice, as she reached under the table and snatched the bottle with an unsteady hand.

She took a big swig, and swallowed hard, pulling a face as she put the cork back into the bottle.

After sitting on the floor for a few minutes, gathering her thoughts and regaining some of her composure, she stood up on slightly wobbly legs and made her way to her bedroom to get ready to meet her best friend, Lucy, for lunch. She approached her vanity cautiously, afraid to see her reflection. It was always like this though, on days after long nights of drinking.

Her eyes weren't as puffy as usual, since she hadn't had a reason to cry the night before, but there was smudged mascara all around her eyes and her cheeks were pale, and there would be no passing it off as though she were in a rush this morning. Lucy would know Mefait had been binge drinking again, and might actually follow through with her before empty threats of sending her to rehab.

Mefait disappeared into the bathroom to wash her face and reapply her make up, when a knock came at the door. She stood up quickly and smoothed her clothes, wondering who it could be. As she made her way to the front door, she quietly tidied up anything that was out of place, and peeked through the peep hole to see who it was.

Donovan, her ex-boyfriend, stood on the other side of the door holding a bouquet of lilies and wearing the most ridiculous smile on his face. She grinned in spite of herself, but wasn't planning to open the door.

"I hear you on the other side Princess," Donovan said, trying to coax her to speak to him. "Come on baby, open the door!"

"I'm not your baby, and stop calling me Princess. I hate when you talk to me like a child," Mefait said, and hit the door.

"I brought your favorite..."

"Go away. I have to get ready to meet Lucy."

"Come on... I just wanna talk!"

"No, you want to mess around with me, then disappear for a week or two before realizing that the only person in this world who cares about you is me, so you'll stop screwing random strangers, then come back to me again. But I'm through with it. Just go away, and stop coming around."

Donovan threw the bouquet of lilies at the door and threw his hands up in the air, before stalking off down the hallway to the elevator. Mefait made sure he was in the elevator before she opened the door and rescued the lilies from the hallway. She held them close to her chest for a moment, and picked out the few that hadn't been broken by Donovan's fit of rage, and placed them in two different vases before going back into the bathroom to get ready to go.

As she entered the cafe where Lucy was waiting for her, she locked eyes with a particularly handsome man sitting behind a laptop, who had been mashing madly away at his keyboard. He stopped typing altogether, and a smile slid across his face. His eyes were piercing blue, and his lashes went on for days. Mefait felt herself blushing, and smiled back, before slowly walking past his table and on to Lucy's.

She looked back over her shoulder to see him still watching her, still smiling in her direction. Her heart fluttered in her chest, and she looked back toward Lucy, who was now watching in complete interest.

"Hello dahling," Lucy said, in her sophisticated British accent. "So who is that?"

"Who was who?" Mefait replied, still blushing immensely.

"Oh don't play coy, I saw how you two were looking at each other."

"I don't know who he is... I have never seen him before."

"Well, why not go talk to him?"

"I can't..."

"Why not? Still hung up on Donovan?"

"Actually no, see-" Mefait explained the morning's events to Lucy, and listened patiently as Lucy expressed her extreme happiness about the situation. She had always told Mefait to lose Donovan, but until now, she didn't know how good it would feel to do so.

"Oh dahling, I am so happy for you! Really, I am. Let's hope he stays gone, eh?"

Mefait let out a nervous laugh, as she locked eyes with the stranger with his laptop once more. Shivers traveled down her spine, and she got goosebumps on her arms and legs. Lucy must have noticed this, because she stood straight up and walked over to his table and invited him to come and sit with them.

He nodded his head, craning his neck around Lucy to see Mefait's face as he stood up, gathered his things, and walked over to their table. Her heart pounded in her chest, and she was unable to keep her hands steady as she sipped her tea lightly, trying to tell herself to calm down.

He pulled a chair from another table and sat next to Mefait, leaving his laptop in its bag by his seat.

"So, what is your name?" Lucy asked the handsome stranger.

"Julian Lily."

"Your last name is Lily?" Mefait asked, masking her excitement.

"Yes. Kind of... silly I know."

"No, not at all. Lilies are my favorite flower..."

Their eyes locked again; she could just drown in those pools of blue. Lucy faked a cough, causing them to look away while she introduced herself, and finally Mefait.

"Really nice to meet the both of you," Julian said.

After spending two hours in the cafe with Julian and Lucy, Mefait had to go home and get to work in her studio. Someone had commissioned her to design a custom wedding dress, and she was still only halfway finished with the project, with the wedding only two months away. As she was walking away from the cafe, she heard footsteps quickly approaching her from behind. She spun around, half-expecting to see Donovan, but instead saw Julian running up to her.

"Hey, I forgot to give you something..." he said, and slid a piece of paper into her hand that had his name and phone number scribbled onto it. "Can I have yours?"

Mefait grinned and wrote her name and number on a piece of paper she had tucked in her handbag, and handed it to him. They were both unsure of what to do next; because they both secretly wanted to kiss each other, though they had just met. Instead, Mefait walked forward and placed a long kiss on his cheek before turning and walking away.

Back in her apartment, Mefait worked on the dress with a bottle of whiskey beside her, still untouched since she had brought it home.
