"Stop it, Liir!" cried Shilloh, tears welling up in his eyes and he dashed inside the house and turned back to face him fearfully.
"Oh, come on!" said Liir, rolling his eyes. "It's just a little dirt!"
"Liir, really!" said Neis, smacking the stick out of his hand. "You know better."
Liir scoffed and Shilloh forced back his tears with a sniff. Liir had never understood his need to remain clean. Since the day he'd moved to their town he'd been teasing him mercilessly for it. Not that others didn't do that, too, but most people at least respected it and resisted the urge to dirty him.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm sorry," said Liir unconvincingly. But for the sake of Neis, who had made him apologize, he accepted it. He dare not wander back outside, though. It was far too risky.
"Sh-shilloh..."
He glanced behind him and jumped, quickly moving to the side. Figmentine was standing behind him shyly, a potted plant clutched to his chest. He smiled weakly at him before continuing outside. Shilloh sighed. How Figmentine could stand to be around so much dirt, he'd never understand. He moved back further into the sunlit house, carefully avoiding Neis's easel, and sat on the ever clean couch.
"If you want to go, you can," came Neis's voice behind him. He turned to face him and shook his head with a smile. He'd left Liir playing with Figmentine's bangs while he tried to continue on to his garden, and his smile fell. "Well, at the very least, don't mope about." And he went back outside to scold Liir.
