Today is such a cold day. The wind is strong, the snowflakes are huge, and I can't even see the workshop where I'm supposed to meet up with Cindy. I look at Max, my freak Rudolph, and oh, I wish we could go back to the comfort of our bed. I'm about to crawl back in the dump tunnel when I see Cindy coming from the main entrance, holding some ugly reindeer styrofoam cups. She shakes it a little under my nose and I almost barf right there. Such a foul smell!
"Mr. Grinch! Martha made some really good hot cocoa for us while we hunt for a nice big Christmas tree!" she said, smiling broadly with her cute red button nose.
I take a sip from the cup; it's ugly and sugary, but Martha made it with love. I cough a little, grunt, and I sigh, "You don't really need me to go out there, being your penguin person while you just sing those horrible Christmas songs. I bet I'll end up carrying the tree all by myself like last time, albeit last time was my fault with the fire and all ..."
"Don't you worry. I called for backup! The mayor is coming, my dad too, and my brothers if they can stop fawning over their girlfriends," she then grabbed my hand and looked at me with an hopeful glint in her eyes.
I can't resist her puppy eyes since my heart grew three sizes. For every size I try to lose, another one grew, and I feel helpless about it. I shake my hand a little and empty my cup of disgusting hot cocoa. "I knew I shouldn't have answered the phone this morning. Who cares about the tree? I could make you one with cardboard", and I sigh, dejected to be forced to do something so joyous so early in the morning.
We silently walk the snowy path with Max who whines a little besides me. I can hear Cindy humming some annoying Christmas song, but I find it comforting. The wind died down, but it's still a little bit too cold for my liking. I look around and spot a big tree, green and proudly reaching the sky. I feel Cindy gasp and squirm around until she looks at me, straight in the eyes, and I almost yell "We need it! It's big and triumphant and it looks just like you! Please, please Uncle Grinch, we need to have it!"
I look at the tree from the bottom to the chicken and I feel myself getting nauseous and green. "No way, Cindy! We will need more than your Dad and probably more than half the town to carry such a huge log and everything." My wild gestures are not something that impress anyone. Cindy just looks at me with glee and a gentle smile.
"I am regretting my life choices, all of them. Alright, alright, bring me the saw and some magic and probably a new set of arms."
I push her behind me and do a small victory move. I bend down and start to cut the big log;
One cut
Two cuts
Tree cuts
I sigh, sweaty and tired, "Okay, wrong idea. Cindy, why don't you try it? Maybe those delicate hands are more lucky than mine." She tries to push the tree and grunts a little. I can't contain my snikers and my huffing; we are not going to move it anytime soon.
Cindy stops and huffs, "Mr. Grinch what if we decorated the tree here? It's not far from your house and we already have one in the city. I bet you'll feel cheerful and happy!" As soon as she's done rambling, I see Martha, boxes in hand and smiling, "Husband of mine, we should decorate the tree right here before dawn." I cough and point at Cindy, "She just suggested the same thing, dear," and I let my eyes trail on her new dress. She looks beautiful. The little girl starts to get lights and colourful ribbons out of the boxes, Max helping her and sniffing around. I dig through the stuff and quickly, the four of us are making the best out of this tree.
I connect the wire together and I look at Cindy, "You can switch the lights, silly pony!" She giggles and switches on the lights. We all remain still, looking at the most beautiful tree ever. The lights are uneven, there are ties and ribbons and a lot of random stuff but it's ours.
And right now, right this instant, there is nothing more important to me in the world. I have friends, a wonderful wife, and that's the most important. I take Cindy in my arms. She's sleepy and it's past her bedtime. Her parents are going to be a little bit angry with me, but it's worth it.
We silently walk back to Whoville and Cindy whispers, "Hey, Mr. Grinch, are you happy?" I smile at Martha and breathe deeply, "Yes, Cindy, now I am."
