There was a whale on his desk.

With a top hat. And a very large erection.

Atticus snorted and erased it from the wood of his desk slowly, watching the creature’s overly excited face disappear and give way to the normal patterns of oaken swirls. Once the whale and his enlarged penis were both gone, he pulled out a piece of paper. The professor’s monotone droning faded, and his pencil traced over the paper. He doodled for a while, scribbling several frogs with shotguns and ridiculously large moustaches singing a ballad on the back of a scrap of notebook paper. He got bored, flipped the sheet over, and began anew. He hadn’t actually drawn something in a long while.

White hair cut lazily in all directions, poofy at the top and thin at the bottom. Feline eyes, wide as he grinned at some sort of inside joke. A thin neck, bony shoulders, and large hands. Axel came to life on the small page, and Atticus smiled as he shaded in the contours of his ears.

”Atticus. Perhaps you would care to share the date in which the first uprising occurred and the Aero community was forced to live underground?”

Ouch. ”2084, professor,” Atticus muttered, grateful he was always on top of his reading. The teacher puffed out his cheeks, but nodded briskly.

”Correct, as usual. Perhaps if you all did your reading too, you would be able to zone out during class and still have a vague idea about what I’m talking about.” Numerous students turned and gave Atticus unpleasant looks, but he just rolled his eyes and looked back to his sketch. He was somewhat of a recluse, and that’s what recluses did – they read. He much preferred hiding in the company of his books than actually looking for company. Though, Axel tended to have other plans.

Atticus smiled again. Axel rarely let him sit alone in his dorm anymore. He was always there, and whether it was him doodling on his laptop while Atticus read, him making fun of various teachers at the school, or them talking about more serious topics, like the constant struggle for Aeros to stay hidden and what would happen if they were found, Atticus never minded. He loved Axel’s company. He filled the space with his excited chatter and his bright smile.

He twitched an ear as the bell gonged overhead, signaling for them to go to their next class. He tucked the drawing under the desk, knowing Axel would find it. These two classes were the only two they didn’t share, and they always sat in the same desk.

Atticus liked that he was never alone anymore.

Aeros had been around for almost a century. Genetic testing, kids being born with fur instead of hair, claws instead of nails, and tails sticking out where they shouldn’t be – it all resulted in a mass of terror. Was it the food? The chemicals in the air? Those vaccinations the dreadful doctors forced upon infants? Society panicked and immediately sent them away. The rejects of the new age. Many families hid their newly evolved children, not wanting to give up their children just because they were different. Those families raised their kids in secret, and, if they had the right contacts, sent them to a school. This school was nestled in the forests of North Carolina, and was built with the safety of such children in mind. Opened in 2190, the Westfield Areo Academy granted all Aeros safety from a constantly probing society.

Atticus liked being an Aero. Being able to shift into a fox at will made him unique, made him feel as though someone would see him as something different. He didn’t know who he was, quite yet, and that was okay; he was different, and he didn’t mind.

--

He took another swig of beer and accepted the blunt that was passed his way. He took a long huff, and smiled as he let the smoke out his nose, his nerves leveling and his senses melting. He took another puff then passed it to Axel, who gave him that grin Atticus loved so much.

Before Axel could take a hit, he grabbed him by the back of his head and slammed their faces together, the kiss neither gentle nor considerate. He felt their teeth click together, and his mouth tasted like weed and beer and cinnamon and Axel and he wanted to kiss him forever.

Axel laughed, and Atticus laughed too, breaking the rough kiss. He wanted to live in this moment, he decided, as he put down his bottle and slid his hands up into Axel’s hair.

--

He was painting Axel’s nails when it happened.

The glass broke inward, and screams echoed through the halls. Atticus jumped and immediately turned to Axel. The chinchilla Aero looked back, and they both sprang into action. They ran out the door and down the hall of his dorm, fighting to breathe through the smoke and trying to weave through the bodies. They found the exit and bound out of it, Atticus yanking Axel’s shirt to the side so they fell against the wall.

”What the fuck,” Atticus breathed. He hadn’t thought it would actually happen. They’d talked about a raid for years, about what to do if they were discovered, but no one had ever actually thought it would happen. They were supposed to be safe. Nothing could touch them here.

He was jolted back to himself by Axel, and they both ducked behind a bush as they saw fifteen or so men charge into their dorm hall, wearing masks and artillery suits. They waited, Atticus’ hands pressed over his ears, trying to block out the screams. He could smell the fear, the pain, the blood –

He snapped back to attention as a loud bang echoed from within the building. A minute passed, then the men came out, Aeros hanging over their shoulders. Some in animal form, others in partial shift – all of them either unconscious or dead. Atticus put a hand over his mouth and squeezed Axel’s arm with his other hand as they carried Darius out, his long leonine body being dragged behind a burly looking soldier.

They needed to run.

Now.
