Alan Humphries would be a member of the Shinigami Dispatch Department, he is like most other shinigami, little tolerance for others who break the rules or don't do their work, calm most of the time, but will become upset easily. But what differs him from other shinigami is an illness he has, called "The Thorns of Death", and it's only cure would be to collect one thousand souls. Alan has no idea his closest friend, Eric, is doing just that for him. Everyone thought Eric was just killing for his own pleasure... that was far from the truth.Though of course, they don't know this just yet so they decide to hunt down Eric, who is with the Viscount, killing more people not scheduled to die. Since the only people allowed in are women with male escorts, Alan has to dress up in a dress and act like a girl with Sebastian Michaelis as their escort. They go off to search for Eric, but when people start to panic because of the opera singer's odd song, and gas seeping through, so they are unable to catch Eric once they find him. Eric then captures Ciel, but is soon released by Sebastian and they flee together, with a few others following behind them.

Then later on, Alan in his normal clothes now, finds Eric and asks him about the killings, obviously angry with him. Eric tells him it was because of the illness Alan has been suffering from, which has been getting worse. Alan forgives Eric, and then Eric promises to not kill anyone else again before the two take off their glasses and run off, meaning they are no longer shinigami.Alan then has an attack from his illness, but says it's nothing and the two keep going but stop yet again when Ciel and Sebastian catch up with them, and Ciel orders Sebastian to kill Eric so the Queen's wish is fulfilled. The two start to fight, but after a while Eric goes to kill Ciel, and right as Eric sweeps his scythe towards Ciel, Alan sacrifices himself for Ciel since he said he promised to not kill anyone else. His record starts to play of his earliest memories with Eric.Eric is then mourning the loss of Alan, laying him down on the steps, then Sebastian kills him with Alan's scythe. Then as Eric falls down on top of Alan's body, all the souls he collected are released and fall around Sebastian and Ciel like snow. Ciel closes the case of the mysterious killings.
