Walking down an alley, you notice a woman sitting on the ground, her long, wavy, chestnut-colored hair obscuring her face. Next to her, there is a small coin-purse. Upon closer inspection, you notice she is sobbing quietly, her long-sleeved arms brought up to her face. Seeing this, a twinge of pity grips you, and you feel around for a coin. As you try to approach her, however, a man approaches you.
"Come with me," he says and grabs you by your elbow, escorting you around the corner. "That woman over there is not a woman at all, but a spirit. Her name is Ptocheia. The spirit of beggary." The man looks at you from under his hood and lowers it.
His eyes are alabaster gray. They'd be more noticable if they weren't surrounded by huge, gray circles. This, of course, he knows. Touching his index and middle finger just below his right eye, he smiles. It's a half smile, but a smile nonetheless.
"I do look a little worn around the eyes, yes. But you should understand that creature out there before you pity her.
"Ptocheia, along with her sisters, Penia and Amechania, were the daughters of two very wealthy ... Aristocrats, for lack of a better term. Growing up with all the money they could dream of, and their parents doting upon them left and right, they never learned to appreciate life the way one should. The three were always tormenting and ridiculing other children for their lack of status.
"They lived their lives out until one day Ptocheia and her sisters found a gypsy child playing in the street with a doll. The three sisters descended upon the boy like wolves going in for the kill, tearing his doll out of his hand and pushing him to the ground. They then beat him up and yelled horrible things at him, calling him Gyppie and good-for-nothing.
"After the beating, they went home, feeling satisfied. Later that night, they awaken, tied to a post in a gypsy camp. The Romani leader comes forward and explains their crime. The assault of a Romani child is taken very seriously in their culture, and back then, curses were often the answer.
"During the curse, however, the mother of the child came forward and killed the three sisters. Because they were killed during a ritual, their spirits still linger in the afterlife. Not quite here, not quite there. And because they were being cursed, they do not look .... natural. Ptocheia weeps, not only because she has lost her money and status, but because she is disfigured.
Looking at the spirit, he lowers his voice. "She took on the qualities of a bird while she was being cursed. As for her sisters, no one knows, because they went into hiding. If you still feel bad for her, by all means, give her that coin. But I feel as though I should inform every person of her deeds before they show any compassion towards her."
You regard the man for a moment. A person like that does not deserve pity, you think, and slowly place the coin back in your pocket. "The name's Ploutos, by the way," he says, and shakes your hand.
