The summer solstice, the longest day of the year in his domain, is his last day of rest. As the days press thinner to meet the stretching nights, he stirs from his sleep and begins to walk.

The earth does not seem to know his time is coming. In day, the sun burns as hot as ever. Cicadas set the air ringing in the afternoon, and crickets take up the chorus at night. Life continues at full swing even as the time to sleep draws near.

He gathers the fireflies, blinking mementos of long summer nights. Their pinprick lights coalesce about his neck in an ever-growing, ever-brightening orb.

He breathes in the heat of the fading summer days and leaves behind the crisp coolness of autumn to come.

He breathes that fire back into the leaves, burning away their green bit by bit and leaving them brittle and colored like flames.

His gentle voice commands the forests' children to prepare for sleep. He whispers softly into the ears of birds, telling them the way to fly.

His footfalls char the ground, and where his claws and shaggy fur drag, he leaves a dusting of ash. A fragile, feather-light frost.

He is so weak at first, and his actions escape the notice of so many throughout his domain. To them, summer is still fierce and strong. They do not know that she is weakening, yielding her strength to the one who has followed her for eons untold. And then it is time. His night arrives.

The leaves burn radiantly, nature's harmless fire. The birds have fled, and those who remained are readying their dens for sleep. The days have thinned and the nights grown fat. The pendant of summer's fireflies is round and orange. It hangs heavy at his throat, the weight of summer's memories.

As the sun sets on his night, he reaches for the pendant. It burns brightly in his paws. With a smile and a soft snuffle, he releases it into the sky. There it hangs, a harvest moon.

Autumn has come.
