Caelum had been estranged from his father for all his adult life due to conflict over 'the family business'. They had parted so bitterly the last time he'd seen his father in fact that when the elder Gormain died Caelum was shocked to discover that he had been left in the will. At the attorney's office he was even more surprised that his father had left him listed as the sole heir to the family fortune and mansion...and the business.

The will included several stipulations and cryptic hints, bits of advice and one or two things Caelum swears his father read on the paper from a fortune cookie. The end result is that he must live in the mansion in order to retain control of the business and cannot alter any of the businesses operations until he has completed all of the tasks which his father set in motion. The business however is run out of the mansion and twenty attractive, men and women who are employed by the business also occupy most of the mansion's spare bedrooms.

'The business', very simply put, is a nominally reformed whore house founded many generations ago by the working-class labourer Skye Gormain who immigrated to the country to try and get ahead in life. The place has been at least partially reformed since then, to a huge extent by Caelum's father but only after their falling out. Now the business is operated as a sort of Host-and-Hostess Club. The twenty people--mostly women and a few men--who live there act as Hosts and Hostesses and entertain 'Guests' who pay for the operation of the club by buying memberships. Security is vigilant, the rules are rather strict and forbid things like the 'Guest' initiating physical contact. If a Guest becomes dissatisfied with their Host or Hostess they can always arrange to meet someone else the next time they come.

Conversation is most of what goes on but for those wealthy enough to pay the membership fees a simple ordinary conversation is something they can't really get anywhere else. Politicians, business executives, celebrities and pop-stars can relax over a quiet dinner and chat about inconsequential or personal things with someone who pays attention and has a pleasant, engaging manner. There are monthly 'events', usually a masked ball with a theme like 'Shakespeare' or 'Arabian Nights' at which time if the Host or Hostess offers physical contact in the form of a dance is acceptable.

Just as the themes of the event nights vary each Host and Hostess has their own carefully cultivated Persona. Regardless of who they are when the Guests leave they have each developed a Persona for when they are Entertaining. Flirty and cute, Serious and intellectual, Shy and sincere each appeals to a different sort of Guest. Some chose their Persona based on the kinds of people they wanted to attract, some based on what they felt they could maintain the best. Each requires a lot of maintenance though--if one is supposed to be a jock and very into sports then he or she must keep up with the latest averages, scores, upcoming recruits and rankings of the various teams for a range of sports since a Guest may be interested in Hockey or Vollyball or Golf. Gardening and calm outdoor pursuits are researched by one Host or Hostess while another may have to keep up with new equipment developed for freestyle mountain climbing. They also maintain crib-notes to help themselves keep track of which of their Guests was doing what, who was going in for what meeting or expressed interest in 'this' versus 'that'. If he wanted to Caelum could operate a very efficient black-mail organisation or do insider trading on the stock markets but it is the absolute security of the place which keeps it in business--Guests know they are safe and that their secrets, even their inner-selves, are safe there.

In spite of what he thought of his father Cealum learned a great deal from the elder Gormain and people who knew the father can see a great deal of him in the son. While Caelum is very uncomfortable or out-right intimidated when interacting with people who work for him he also possesses a shrewd business mind and can be fearless if he manages to forget how strange and wrong everything around him has become—he was raised to be a Gormain after all.

Well educated but not very social, with the reading of that one will he went from slumming it to living in a twenty-five bedroom mansion with tennis court, a pond for canoeing in, several pools indoor and out, and grounds extensive enough to keep a few riding ponies out back. Plunged into the very world he had tried so hard to avoid Caelum is surrounded by men with guns, a constant stream of people from the common to political leaders and celebrities as well as police trying to prove he is a pimp, reporters seeking dirt on the Guests (as well as Cae) and those lovely Hosts and Hostesses who are each always ready with a smile or comment perfectly tailored for their type of Guest.
