Madena studied Paul's face as they trudged through the snow.
"Don't look at me like that girl, I know where we are going," he said through chattering teeth. "I just got a little sidetracked is all. We'll be home by dinner..."They had been walking for what felt like forever, after one of the tires on Paul's truck blew out causing it to flip over on its side, forcing them to have to get out and walk.
What Paul didn't know, is that a rescue vehicle had happened upon the scene of the wreck, and was calling out his name, some ten miles back.
Madena felt she could find her way back home, but she would never abandon Paul. He had rescued her as a puppy from her mother, who was did not receive her maternal instincts and had starved all but one tiny puppy to death. Madena was clinging to life when Paul found her under an old truck in the junkyard where he worked, and he immediately took off the blue scarf he had been wearing around his neck, wrapped it around her, and took her home.
"Hey you," he said in a soothing tone, and tilted his head slightly to the side. "I'm gonna get you all warmed up, don't worry..."
He had looked into her light blue eyes with his own, and proclaimed that he would take care of her.
The fact that he had taken her in, without knowing if she was sick or not, showed unmistakable love and compassion, something she had not known from her own mother.
It was growing darker out, and the temperature felt like it was plummeting by the minute. Snow had begun falling in slow drifts, but had since picked up into a small flurry. They stopped under a tree, and Paul took Madena's blue scarf from his pocket and wrapped it around her, and sat down next to her in the snow.
"I messed up, girl. I messed up bad. I am... so lost..." he said, as a tear rolled down his cheek.
He coughed hard, a cough she hadn't heard before, with a deep wheezing in his chest. Paul had always been the sickly type, and she knew he couldn't stay much longer in the cold, when all he had to keep him warm was one coat. She scooted in close to him, and nuzzled against his chest. He wrapped both arms around her and pulled her onto his lap, and they sat together.
She felt Paul's arms grow heavy, but was used to him falling asleep quickly, so she rested her head on his chest and fell asleep with him.
When she woke up, Paul was gone. She let out a whimper, then a weak bark to call out for him. She was scared, and instantly felt abandoned. Something was different though, but she couldn't place it. She could no longer feel the cold on her paws.
The sun was high, and the snow had stopped, but she couldn't see any foot prints at all. Surely Paul wouldn't have left during a snow storm, so why weren't there any footprints?
Madena ran through the snow, searching hard for any sign of him.
'Where is he?!' she thought to herself, feeling abandoned.
She looked to the left, nothing. To the right, still nothing. When she looked over her shoulder at the way she had come from, her heart slammed in her chest. Nothing. No paw prints in the snow. Nothing to show she had even walked from that direction.
She let out a loud bark, and found something odd. No echo.
Where was he?
Suddenly, she felt something brush up against her, it was light though. Almost ghost like. Again, something touched her, this time, bristling her fur lightly. It felt like a hand.
"Poor thing..." she heard faintly, like a whisper.
Her ears perked up, but she couldn't hear anything else.
"They must have gotten lost..." she heard suddenly. "... froze pretty quickly..."
It came to her slowly, like a tiny spider creeping along length of a hallway. A hallway in a house that would now be empty. A hallway in this empty house that she and Paul would never enter again...
They had died...
But where was Paul? Would she never be joined with him again?
Off in the distance, she saw a dark figure. It approached her slowly, at walking pace. Though it definitely wasn't her human, she felt strangely attracted to it, like the warmth she needed.
She ran toward it, not knowing what it could be, or if it was dangerous, but just knew in her heart that she would love it no matter what it turned out to be.
It was a Husky, a little bigger than she was, with silver and white fur, and he had the most familiar light blue eyes that searched her own knowingly. He tilted his head to the side, and that's when Madena knew.
