Cygnus the male Galactic Mallarchy

* The Story

Cygnus and Phaeton were two friends - close friends that were constantly competing with each other. One day, they decided to race across the sky in another one of their many competitions. The first one to race around the sun, then back to Earth, would win. Trying to gain an advantage over the other, they both strayed too close to the sun, and the chariots they were riding in burned up.

Luckily enough, neither Cygnus nor Phaeton were hurt terribly by the sun's rays - although the fall back to Earth was rather long and tedious. Both friends were both knocked unconscious by the fall. Once Cygnus woke up, he found Phaeton trapped by the roots of a tree at the bottom of the Eridanus River.

Phaeton was dead.

Cygnus mourned for Phaeton, but he knew his guilt would never be entirely appeased unless he retrieved his lost friend's body and buried it. However, try as Cygnus might, he couldn't rescue Phaeton. He dove in and out of the river an innumerable amount of times, but could never quite reach his friend. Exhausted, Cygnus sat on the bank of the river and prayed for Zeus to help him.

To Cygnus' surprise and great relief, Zeus replied. Zeus said that he could give Cygnus the body of a swan, which would enable him to rescue his friend. However, in doing so, Cygnus would also be forced to give up his immortality and live the life of a regular swan. Without hesitation or a second thought, Cygnus agreed to Zeus' terms. Touched by Cygnus' selflessness, Zeus placed Cygnus' image, that of a swan's, into the sky to live forevermore.

And Cygnus is still there to this day.
