"Spring"

The spring wind

scattering blossoms,

I saw it in a dream,

But when I awoke,

The sound was still rustling

in my breast

- Saigyo Hoshi

Hanami

Hanami (花見) literally means "flower viewing", however, it commonly refers only to cherry blossom viewing. Cherry blossom viewing is easy: simply enjoy the intensity of the many blossoms by looking at a single tree or a group of trees. From a distance, the trees appear as beautiful clouds, while the beauty of single blossoms can be enjoyed from a close distance.

Bento

Celebrate the rich colours and produce of Spring with this special hanami bento (花見弁当.). Every spring Japan’s sakura cherry trees burst into blossom and attract millions of Japanese people to celebrate this riot of colour with picnics in the great outdoors, featuring bento lunches like this. Make your own hanami bento box and celebrate springtime.

Dango

Hanami Dango (花見団子), also called Sanshoku Dango (3 coloured dango) is another variant of the dango family. It is the iconic pink, white and green dango on a stick, there is even an emoji for it on iPhones! This special tri-coloured dango is sold year around, but is especially popular during the spring during the cherry blossom viewing.

Mochi

Sakura Mochi (桜餅) is a chewy, light pink glutinous rice ball filled with sweet red bean paste and wrapped in an edible pickled cherry blossom leaf. In Japan, we enjoy this delectable salty-and-sweet confectionery for Girls’ Day and cherry blossom viewing in the springtime.

Memories

Emmah was just getting over her sickness when she first saw the pink petals.
She was coming home when she spotted them across the street.
Emmah had been sick for 2 weeks. Fatigue, a high fever, losing her voice. It all took a toll on her.
However, energy surged from within her and she dashed to the other side.
It must have been a strange sight for locals. To see a young girl stand in the middle of the street, next to the gutter, staring at a tree.
But Emmah did not notice her surroundings. She was enchanted by the cherry blossoms.
Time flew by as Emmah started making her way back home. She was overjoyed and motivated.
As soon as she got home she got ready to head out.
And to her destination she ran. Ok, not ran, more like a mixture of jogging and walking. 70-30
Sakura park. With a name like that it cannot disappoint!
And boy did it not. Sakura trees lined up as far as the eye can see.
Emmah took her time strolling through this magical pink forest.
The fragility of life, just like this delicate flower, both so overwhelmingly beautiful but also tragically short.

The next few days were jam packed with strolls. Emmah found every opportunity to be out and about.
Since she was sick for majority of sakura season, Emmah only had a few days to explore.
As time passed, her strength returned. By now the ground was covered by a sea of petals.
Emmah looked up in the sky as the petals were swept away by the wind.
Sakura season was ending.

A year has gone by and Emmah was ready for round two!
Healthy as one can be and with a game plan in hand, Emmah was ready.
The city was like a playground. Many twists and turns that hid pink gems along the way.
Emmah was grateful for her legs, for carrying her to all her desired destinations for hours and hours on end.
She was also grateful for her mind as it had accumulated traveling knowledge.
Streetsigns, trains, flights, Emmah knew how to navigate.

The next two weeks went by just as fast as last year's. However, with her health intact,
Emmah was able to live her sakura dreams to the fullest.
Enjoying hanami for the first time. It is very relaxing to lay down, eat your bento
and hear the laughter of those enjoying being in the moment.
Festivals! The music, games, dance, and the food.
Oh the food, all the traditional festival food yours for the choosing!
What would you choose? Taiyaki? The fish shaped stuffed pancakes. The candy covered strawberries? Yum!
Or maybe a more traditional hanami dango or sakura mochi? There is no wrong answer...
However, amongst all the joy there is sadness too. Sakura season is also time for goodbyes.
It signifies changes.
Emmah bid farewell to good friends.
Friends that welcomed a stranger when she needed a friendly face.
Almost two years have passed since she first moved into town.
One day it will be her time to leave too.
And what will remain?
Everlasting bonds.
