"Spring"

The spring wind

scattering blossoms,

I saw it in a dream,

But when I awoke,

The sound was still rustling

in my breast

- Saigyo Hoshi

Hanami

Hanami (花見) literally means "flower viewing", however, it commonly refers only to cherry blossom viewing. Cherry blossom viewing is easy: simply enjoy the intensity of the many blossoms by looking at a single tree or a group of trees. From a distance, the trees appear as beautiful clouds, while the beauty of single blossoms can be enjoyed from a close distance.

Bento

Celebrate the rich colours and produce of Spring with this special hanami bento (花見弁当.). Every spring Japan’s sakura cherry trees burst into blossom and attract millions of Japanese people to celebrate this riot of colour with picnics in the great outdoors, featuring bento lunches like this. Make your own hanami bento box and celebrate springtime.

Dango

Hanami Dango (花見団子), also called Sanshoku Dango (3 coloured dango) is another variant of the dango family. It is the iconic pink, white and green dango on a stick, there is even an emoji for it on iPhones! This special tri-coloured dango is sold year around, but is especially popular during the spring during the cherry blossom viewing.

Mochi

Sakura Mochi (桜餅) is a chewy, light pink glutinous rice ball filled with sweet red bean paste and wrapped in an edible pickled cherry blossom leaf. In Japan, we enjoy this delectable salty-and-sweet confectionery for Girls’ Day and cherry blossom viewing in the springtime.

Memories

Emmah was just getting over her sickness when she first saw the pink petals.
She was on her way home when she spotted them across the street.
She had been sick for two weeks—fatigue, a high fever, losing her voice. It had taken a toll on her.

But something stirred inside her.
A sudden energy. A pull.
She darted across the road.

It must’ve been a strange sight for the locals—
a young girl standing in the middle of the street, next to a gutter, just… staring at a tree.
But Emmah didn’t notice anyone or anything else.
She was completely enchanted by her first cherry blossoms.

Time seemed to pause around her—until it didn't.
The next thing she knew, her feet were already moving again, drawn by the promise of more.

And then she found it.
Sakura Park.
With a name like that, how could it disappoint?
And boy, did it not.

Sakura trees lined up as far as the eye could see,
a gentle pink forest pulled straight from a dream.

Emmah took her time strolling through it.
The fragility of life—just like these delicate flowers—
both so overwhelmingly beautiful,
but also heartbreakingly short.

The next few days were jam-packed with strolls.
Emmah found every opportunity to be out and about.
After all, sakura season had danced by her window, just out of reach.
The peak bloom comes and goes so quickly—
one day the trees are bursting with color, the next, the petals are already drifting to the ground.

As time passed, her strength returned.
By now, the ground was covered by a sea of petals.
Emmah looked up at the sky as the wind swept the last blossoms into the air.
Sakura season was ending.

A year passed, and Emmah was ready for round two.
Healthy, happy, and with a game plan in hand, she set out once more.

The city had become her playground—
so many twists and turns hiding pink gems along the way.

She was grateful for her legs,
for carrying her to all her destinations, hour after hour.
She was grateful for her mind,
now full of travel knowledge: street signs, trains, even flights.
She knew how to navigate it all.

Those next two weeks flew by, just like the year before.
But this time, her health intact,
Emmah was able to live her sakura dreams to the fullest.

She enjoyed hanami for the first time—
laying down under the trees, eating bento,
listening to the laughter of those simply enjoying the moment.

Festivals!
Music, games, dancing, and the food.

Oh, the food.
All the traditional festival snacks, yours for the choosing!

What would you pick?
Taiyaki—the fish-shaped stuffed pancakes?
Candy-covered strawberries? Yum.
Or maybe a more traditional hanami dango or sakura mochi?

There’s no wrong answer.

But among all the joy, there’s a quiet sadness, too.
Sakura season is also a time for goodbyes.
It marks change.

Emmah said farewell to good friends—
people who had welcomed a stranger when she needed a friendly face.

Almost two years had passed since she first moved into town.
And one day, it would be her time to leave, too.

And what would remain?
She would carry it all in her heart—every smile, every goodbye—
stitched into something timeless.
