Words are woven in veils looser than lace, and yet they separate us from worlds that time has never once touched upon in a fashion more akin to iron bars. Have not people dreamed of reaching through or, still more wondrously, of breaking free completely from our time-ravaged reality, to walk among the knights and fairies and princes?

Well, truly, once upon our time, such a prince broke his prison of those twisted black bars to walk among us. However, his duties as a prince held him more strongly than the story's pages had been able to. It was his written fate to love all his people, and his love for them led him to break his own heart. With a sword, he shattered it, and the bloodless fragments of his soul sealed a powerful Raven, the prince's greatest enemy. The prince had been utterly noble; he had wisdom beyond what our world would ever bless its people with; he was brave beyond possibility, but somehow, never rationality. But with the strength of a heart that would never despair serving as the perfect prison for the Raven that always hungered for suffering, the prince had nothing left. His eyes were lit only by reflection, never the internal glow of happiness, not even the burn of anger or the pale sheen of fear.

So he wandered our world, until a brave Knight took him in. Such a Knight did not belong outside the bounds of a story, and indeed, the Knight would not remain outside of the story for long. Instead, he would choose a different path. But that is much later. In the beginning of the story, penned on the unlikely paper of this world, he looked after the prince. The prince needed much looking after, for while his heart was no more, he always strove to rescue those weaker than himself. It was an inclination that beat through his bones; and now that he had no thought or emotion to restrain it, it was the sole force capable of driving him to act of his own will. This, and a fondness for dancing, were proven to remain with him. It almost seemed as though by dancing, his body could release all that he was without the ability to feel.

One day, a princess came to him. She was beautiful, and she danced with him. She also hurt him terribly, an aching in his chest that would not subside. He was lost, suddenly aware enough to be lost, suddenly with enough of a heart for him to be wounded in it. Yet she persisted, because she knew what he could not, that if she returned his heart to him, he could once again be happy, and he could once again love. It was this princess's greatest wish, in fact, her only wish, to see the prince smile.

This prince, however, had received an unusual bend in his tale, as two princesses soon appeared to him. The beautiful princess, who wanted to see him smile, and a dark princess of feather and claw, who hated his smile. But above that hatred was fear. The dark princess, too, was in love with the prince, and had always been. There was doubt in her heart, for when the prince's own heart returned, would he be able to say that he loved her anymore? She wished to forever be able to command him to announce his love for her, and to hear it from his lips.

The prince was poisoned by the dark princess, the child of the Raven, until his partial heart was so tainted by the monster's blood that he could no longer keep his shape as a human, and he was heedless of the despair both princesses fell into upon seeing his new cruelty. It was this despair that ultimately saved him, for the dark princess at last cried out of her love, instead of offering him words of a heart he hadn't possessed for her. Her love restored his form, and the beautiful princess was able to restore his heart.

But it was the dark princess, who shared his poison with him, who had screamed out to save him without believing he would give her a thought but to despise her, that he chose as
his princess. With her, he struck the final blow against the Raven, and together, these characters had forged their own happy ending.

My greatest enemy... I grew sick of fighting, and I would no longer allow you to interfere with my princess's happiness, or my own.
