It was a very cold day on the day I found you May 23rd 2003. I had just gone to university and it was my first semester living far from home and by myself, I was terrified. New city, new people, even new weather. Late night I heard a very acute meow coming from somewhere outside, but the neighbours had cats so I thought there were new baby kitten, still I opened my window to try to see the source of that persistent meowing but it was pitch black outside and I couldn't see a thing. The next morning, it wasn't even 6am but I was awake and heard another meow. I ran to my window again and I could spot this little white dot in the middle of the muddy ground from an abandoned place, three houses away from me. I did not even think, I just grabbed my jacket and went to that dot. It was you, shivering from the cold, heck there was mud even up your tiny nostrills! You weren't even a month old, but you survive that entire night alone in that freezing darkness. Your right eye was closed because your eyelids were covered in pus, and as you meowed hoarsely, I took you home.

I heated up some water to give you a bath, you were not only covered in mud but also completely taken by fleas (I lost track after I killed the flea number 30). After a hot bath, I put you inside my jacket and you slept peacefully. I skipped class that day.

After a visit to the closest vet, and 7 days of eye drops here and there and your feeding bottle (I fed her with "home made baby pet milk" the vet taught me to prepare: a mix of whole milk, an egg yolk, honey, dairy flour if I remember correctly), you were 100% and showed to be a very brave and funny cat. No wonder you are my tough girl and also my biggest friend in the entire universe. Not only you kept me company for those five whole years in university, being there for me when I was hurt or crying my eyes out, when I was betrayed by so many friends and scared by the truth of humankind, there was you I could count on to wait by the door when I got home, to purr and take sweet naps and also to bite me with all your strenght to make me come back to reality and react to certain situations! You are the real deal, Spud. I tell you everyday that if it wasn't you, I would have given up on my university and who knows what else.

After uni, you were there with me moving up and down towns, going back to my parents' place or moving to our own place (in total FOUR movings! girl you sure are tough), and you never fail to amaze me as my closest friend and dearest living being in this entire world. Healthy as I've never seen any cat be, now with 11 years old (2024) and still the same baby face of always, the same look in your eyes that always make me smile. No wonder you are spoiled to the core - you love lamb, strawberry (the artificial, pink one, not the natural fruit) and cheese. You do enjoy some catnip from time to time, and your toys are always scattered around the house. For some reason you also love to stick your head inside my shoes after a long day of me wearing them, uh... Thanks? I just don't understand why you have to come meet me as soon as I step out of the shower just to rub yourself on my legs still wet and bite me as soon as your fur gets wet. All the time, Spuds, really?

I only wish you could read, for this is a tribute for you being the best friend for me. I love you with all my heart, please don't ever leave me (we already talked about this, and you know you are only allowed a peaceful death in your sleep, of very old age and being healthy as always, in about 50 years from now).
