His hatred grew and grew; he longed to be free. Longed to be with his brethren, pulling the sun chariot through the sky... hearing the commands of his owner, Helios. Longed for what he used to know. But now it's all nothing but a faint memory: taken away from him by a selfish greedy man. Now, he was kept in a cage, legs shackled by chains. Kept in a small dark chamber away from the sky, away from the sun. His eyes only caught a glimpse of the sun light from a tiny hole in the cracking walls. Every day, he stared at it as if it's the last time he would ever see it again. Every day, he closed his eyes as the sun moved away, feeling his heartbeat race with the yearning to run with the sun.

One day, the chamber doors opened, light bursting through the door, hitting Aethon in the face. His heart began to race with excitement, beating faster than ever before. Trying to kick his legs free from the chains, he screamed out, hoping his friends would hear him. With all his might he rammed his body and head on the cage bars. Pain lanced through him as he broke the skin on his head. Blood began dripping down his face, and the muscles in his legs began twitching with the exertion. Aethon's heart suddenly froze at the sight of the man in the doorway. The human had a sick grin on his face, and was staring straight into his captive's eyes. Aethon's eyes never wavered from the man who had stolen his life away. The man stood right in front of him, laughing at Aethon as he wiped the spit from his mouth. "You don't need to know my name. From now on I'm your master, and you will do as I say," the man's black eyes stared right into Aethon's. He suddenly grabed Aethons mane through the bars, pulling his face towards him. Aethon tried to shake free, but the man's grip was too strong. Fear raced through Aethon, who wondered what would happen to him. Why had this man taken him? Why had he put him in the cage? Aethon's heart filled with fear. What was to come could never be anything good. "Tonight you'll be my most prized position in my collection. Tonight's show you'll ignite your mane and tail in a fiery blaze, showing my audience your power. If you fail to please me and my audience, or make me lose my money, I'll have no problem whipping you into shape." The man chuckled at his own sick joke and shoved Aethons head to the right side of the cage, showing him a wall full of leather bound whips and chains; all stained with old blood from previous animals who had disobeyed the man. Aethon finally jerked his head away from the man when he felt his grip loosen just enough, looking at him with fear. The man stared back grinning, and laughing, at Aethon. The man finally left the room, but his presence still filled the room with the scent of death and fear. Aethon gazed down at the ground. Why me? How could someone be so cruel? Why haven't my friends come for me? Why hasn't Helios? Tears fill his eyes, thinking he'd been forgotten, left all alone to never be loved again.

A week passed by, and the man returned to Aethon. An uneasy feeling hit Aethon as soon as he saw the man. He strode in with a group of rugged, black-hearted men who smelled of cheap beer. All of them carried huge chains in their hands. Two men followed, carrying a huge metal neck brace between them. One man began to open Aethons cage, but the man quickly slammed it shut, his black eyes glittering as he caught Aethon's eyes."Before we get started with the show, remember what I said to you. It would be...selfish of you... to force me to punish you. It would be all your fault of course. I don't want to punish you, but if you don't give me what I want, why then I must." Aethon stared, stunned by the man's abusive words; the man was laying all the blame of cruelty on his victim's shoulders. Looking away at the group of men, the man barked, "Bring him down to his knees first, you'll be able to get the neck brace on easier and he won't be able to fight if he's at his knees." One man picked up a whip from the wall and smacked it against Aethons back knee to bring him down. Aethon screamed out in pain but got up as soon as he hit the ground, ramming the gate with his head and snarling, making the men back off. The man turned around quickly, glaring at Aethon. Then he smiled that sick smile again, showing that his next order gave him a great deal of pleasure. "Get him ready. At any cost! Now!" It took nearly an hour. Aethon fighting back as the blows rained down on him, one after another. But he could not stand up to such abuse for long and he finally collapsed, unable to stand anymore. The chains made ugly sounds as they snapped into place. Then the men dragged Aethon into to a huge tent.

Inside was a giant stage and seating all around it. The men hooked Aethon up to the stage, one of them not securing the chain tight enough. None of the men noticed, and Aethon didn't tip them off. A curtain surrounded Aethon and soon after he could hear the sounds of people beginning to take their seats. The place if full of noise, making Aethon anxious. The man walked in front of Aethon, giving him a glare of warning and a cold smile. "Make me rich now." The man left, slipping through the curtains and strode onto the stage, his voice echoing as he talked to the people. Aethon pondered about the loose chain around his leg and when he should try and break free. Suddenly the curtains rose up, catching Aethon off guard and startling him. The audience stared at Aethon without blinking. Aethon froze, shocked by the number of people looking at him. Aethon hadn't realized that the curtains had startled him into igniting his mane and tail into a fiery blaze. The audience could feel the heat coming off Aethon, and began sweating as the tent began to rapidly heat up.Then the crowd went wild. The crowd of people started yelling and hollering, holding money up in the air as they started to argue with one another, bidding on Aethon: wanting him as a trophy. Aethon turned to the man, and saw that the man's expression was eager and pleased. Aethon was confused until he saw his own flames reflected in the man's eyes. His heart filled with rage and he kicked the chain off his foot. With a powerful blow, he struck the lock holding his neck brace and snapped it clean off. Shaking the brace off, he reared up and began bucking wildly, breaking another chain off his leg. He screamed out loud with a terrifying roar, foam flecking his mouth, his eyes bloodshot with rage and anger. Everyone in the audience watched in horror as Aethon freed himself and became a wild animal, blinded by rage. Realizing the danger they started screaming in fear and fled out of the tent, wildly pushing each other over in an effort to escape, men and women alike being trampled. With every kick, Aethon's bonds loosened. The man walked off to the back of the stage, fists clenched tightly, making his veins pop out on his hands and arms, the muscles straining as they flexed. Aethon screamed once more as the last chain broke free, not noticing the man disappear off stage. Suddenly there was a loud crack, stopping his fiery rage in a instant. The man was standing by him, holding a mace in his hand. Aethon felt a sharp burning pain in his leg and fell to the ground in agony, realizing that the cracking sound was the sound of the man breaking his back leg. As Aethon lays on the stage, wincing in pain, the man walked closer to him, staring down with a crazed look in his eyes."You made me lose a lot of money with that stunt. I'll teach you not to make me look like a fool!" The man hit Aethon over the head, knocking him out.

Waking up back in the cage, Aethon slowly tried to get to his feet. But the instant he tried standing on the broken leg, he heard the bones crack, sharp points of bone piecing through muscle and skin. Falling back to the ground with a wave of pain surging though his leg, Aethon lost his breath as the pain grew more and more intense. The man rushed into the room, grabbing a whip off the wall and ranting incoherantly in rage. His eyes were as crazy as a bull, staring at Aethon. As the man entered Aethon's cage he raised his hand, whip ready to strike. As his hand flew down, Aethon lunged forward and bit the man on the leg. The move was so unexpected that the man yelled in shock, dropping the whip and falling backward out of the cage. But the man wasn't beaten yet, and infuriated even further, the man ran to the wall and seized a whip with hooks attached to the ends. Running back to the cage and letting out a wild snarl, the man used the whip with wicked skill, striking the side of Aethon's face with the hooks and jerking, tearing the flesh.Aethon cry's out with fear and pain as the man hits Aethon wildly one after another all over his body as the hooks ripped and tore into Aethons skin and muscle, flinging blood all over the cage. Aethon lays paralyzed by the pain, unable to move, unable to make a sound. As the man raised his hand one more time with the hooked whip dripping with blood. Aethon lays his head down and closes his eyes: thinking of his beloved master and his brethren for the last time.

A blast of light filled the room, blinding the man and making him drop the hooked whip. The man stumbled back, blinded by the intense light. He squinted, trying to peer around his hands as they rose to shield his eyes, but he could not see the source of the light. Something slammed into the man, and he was thrown to the wall with such force that his spine snapped like a twig and he collapsed. The light finally began to dissipate, and the man's eyes widened in shock and terror as he saw what was standing before his very eyes. The sun god himself Helios wearing his crowned aureole upon his head. Staring at the man with burring rage in his eyes, Helios said nothing.Instead, his eyes trailed to Aethon and he walked to his cage. Neither Aethon nor Helios noticed or cared when the man's life slipped from his damaged body as soon as the god turned his back on him. Aethon lays senseless in the cage, laying still as though dead. Something touched his face, gentle and warm. The pain vanished. Almost disbelieving, Aethon opened his eyes and found his beloved master kneeling over him. Helios looked at Aethon with a smile and softly murmured, "Old friend, let the pain fade from your body and your heart. Let the fear drain away, leaving you whole and happy once more. You are safe, now and forever, in my arms." Aethon's heart filled with joy once again; seeing his master and hearing his fellow horses nickering and stamping outside, impatient and eager to return to the skies above. Aethon cried with joy in the hands of his beloved master.Gentle warmth spilled through him, erasing the pain that had enveloped him from nose to hindquarters. He heard, more than felt, his leg straightening; the bone fragments were returning to their original places and fusing into solid, healthy bone. Damaged muscles itched briefly as the damage repaired itself under his master's healing hands.Tentatively, he stretched and flexed his once damaged leg. There was no pain. After a moment, he tried to get up. He slipped slightly, his own blood making the floor to his cage slick. But Helios murmured reassurances and lead him safely to the solid floor. Faint scars crisscrossed Aethon's skin, but they no longer bled. His skin was whole and sound. Muscles moved as they should, and his leg supported his weight just as it had before it had been shattered."My dear friend, are you ready to return home?" Helios murmured, as fresh air poured over them. The horrible stench of pain, fear, blood and greed fell away: replaced by open air, flowers and the scent of the other horses hitched to the chariot.Aethon whinnied eagerly and tossed his head in an eager nod.Laughing, Helios hitched him into place before the chariot, settling the harness carefully and making sure it still fit. Back in his familiar spot, Aethon stamped his hooves eagerly and stretched his face toward the sky, hungry to feel the wind rushing through his mane. There was a titch of the reins and the horses moved as one; rising into a swift gallop along the road, heat making the air around them waver. Finally fire exploded from the manes and tails of his bretheren in unison and the magnificent chariot lifted off the ground as the pounding hooves rose above the earth. The ground slipped away and with it, fell the old fear and hatred. The memories of the pain faded as well, and soon Aethon raced along with his fellow horses with the same fierce joy as he had before he had been taken. His ordeal was over. He would never again be taken. He would never again be hurt. And he would never again look back upon those horrible memories. Aethon was returning home, and he would only look forward from now on.
