Lenis was a curious bird. Not in the sense that she was anything special. She wasn't. She had wings, a beak, two feet and a tail just like every other bird she'd ever seen. Granted that wasn't saying a lot since she'd never left the suburban neighborhood where she and her siblings had hatched just a few months earlier.

No, Lenis was curious about the world. The rows of orderly backyards seperated by the tall trimmed hedges were far from the wild nature Lenis dreamed of exploring. Even though Lenis didn't quite know what the wild was like it didn't stop her from wanting to see it. But being a house sparrow meant she wasn't likely to ever stray far from the comforts of her home.

Migratory birds passing by often told stories of the places they'd seen. They spoke of houses taller than any tree packed tightly together barely leaving room for even the smallest patch of grass. But they also spoke of forests so large there was a tree for every bird and wide open spaces, fields of wheat, corn and rye side by side as far as you could see.

Lenis couldn't quite wrap her head around the concept of these places so vast you couldn't spot the end.
