Story

He closes his eyes, turning his face up to the sun and enjoying the moment as the welcome warmth seeps into his fur. There is nothing a surfer loves more than that perfect moment of serenity just before the coming of the wave. Riding Big Blue is a thrill and executing a perfect turtle roll is rad but nothing compares to the feeling that all is right with the world.

His body is so attuned to the motion of the ocean that he does not shoot glances at the other surfers like the tourists on their wobbly legs. He does not even turn his head to judge the distance of the incoming wave. He stands with care, positioning his body just right. The roll of the wave carries him forward and he is riding a crest that gives him a view of his favorite beach all the way to the distant parking zone with the concession stand shaped like an octopus. It feels good to put his endurance to the test, shifting ever so slightly to avoid a washout, weaving over the water's surface as he rides the wave in for a perfect beach landing.

The second wave is even better. He feels like a proud captain, standing on the bow of his ship as the wind whips back his hair and teasingly combs the knots from his beard. The spray on his face is like the touch of gentle rain. He worships the sun, but there is a beauty in the sparkle of raindrops on the driftwood fence that borders the parking zone. Only the heaviest of downpours will keep him inside, waxing up his surfboard for a brighter day. The only thing he hates more than being rained in is a calm day with no waves.

He can hear a fellow surfer calling out "Duu-uuud-dee!" Amateur.

He has to angle his body to avoid colliding with a little girl building a sandcastle right at the water's edge. Her mother's face is turning red from screeching as the child laughs in delight, her princess dress thoroughly soaked. Savitar cannot avoid the spray of sand raised by his landed board. The girl is crying now, trying to tug away from her mother to retrieve her plastic red shovel before it is washed away by the tide. A guy in a bright blue pair of shorts hands it to her with a grin.

Savitar stoops to pick up his board, pulling a face at the specks of sand in his beige and blue fur. Its luxurious length keeps the water from ever chilling his skin but it is a pain to clean.

"Hey dude, that was totally rad! How'd you manage to crest like that?"

He'd been too distracted by the family drama to realize he had a pair of followers. These guys had to be high school. The tub of gel in their hair screamed try-hard. One had on an oversized t-shirt that said "Party Hardy" in lime green bubble letters. The other wore a pair of swimming trunks dotted with skulls.

He would not be sucked into a lengthy chat with guys who didn't know their rails from railroad tracks. What a drag! He gave them a rundown of the basics, throwing in a few random tricks he'd made up on the spot for extra points. They had no idea what he was saying but they sure were eager to get on their boards. He even threw them a "Hang loose!" as they left for good measure.

His favorite spot is a short walk from the beach's only dock. He calls it The Lagoon though in truth it is only a large tide pool. There's a sort of natural bench eroded into the tan stone that forms the pool and this is where he always sits as the sun prepares for departure. A handful of the clear water washes away the pesky grains of sand, allowing him to settle in comfort. The sunset today is especially glorious, buttery yellow melting into orange, red, pink, turquoise and finally back to the deep blue mirrored on the surface of the ocean below.
