Sliding among the rocks, her thick corded hair floated weightlessly giving her the illusion of camouflage. Smiling darkly she eyed the drowning man, flailing his arms in a futile attempt to save his sorry excuse of a life. It was a pathetic sight. Humans gravitated towards the water in search of food and adventure and so many lost their lives, slowly suffocating as water fills their lungs.

If she had pitied the sailor she would have led him ashore. The sailor would then hunt her, in hopes to gain fame and fortune by catching or killing a mermaid. Reasonably, she felt no remorse for the drowning soul, but she decided to aid him. Approaching from below, she circled about the steadily sinking body. Screams echoed off the surface of the water as the mortal discovered her presence.

A sly smile graced her taunt lips as she grasped a kicking ankle. Using the strength of her tail she swam downward, dragging the man deeper and deeper into the abyss. Pressure built on the struggling form until movement slowed, becoming more labored before stopping completely. Just like that a life was over, so helpless to change his fate.
