Begin your adventure!

You find yourself standing outside a sprawling lab. The day is finally here! It's time to choose your very first starter Pokemon and set off on your journey. Professor Oak, who you've known since childhood, invites you inside. He beams at you as he leads you towards the center of the cluttered lab.

"I have three Pokemon here," he explains, "you're the first to arrive, so you get first choice."

You look at the three PokeBalls in the machine and think about the Pokemon inside. Grass, Fire, Water; all of them are equally balanced, but you've always felt a certain affinity with one particular type... You reach out a hand slowly, surprised to see you are trembling. Which Pokemon will you choose?

You want the Grass-type, Bulbasaur?

You want the Fire-type, Charmander?

You want the Water-type, Squirtle?
You grab the PokeBall containing Bulbasaur without hesitating. You've always had a soft spot for the little green dinosaur. As soon as your hands close on the ball you feel a rush of static up your arm, as if you've just grabbed something very powerful. The tension reaches breaking point as you hold the ball out in front of you.

"Bulbasaur, come out!" you yell with excitement, your voice echoing around the cluttered lab.

In a flash of red light, a green creature with dark spots and a dark green bulb materialises before you. Its large, red eyes glance at you nervously and it looks from you to the lab unsurely.

Add Bulbasaur to your team!

You step toward the startled creature, holding out a hand tentatively.

"Hi there little one, I'm your new trainer."

You smile, trying to look as welcoming as possible. The Pokemon blinks at you and after a few moments of silence, apparently decides you can be trusted.

"Bulba!" it exlaims happily, and you realise your new Pokemon has probably been dreaming about this day as much as you have. It extends a green vine from the base of its bulb and you shake it firmly.

"It looks like Bulbasaur's warmed up to you already." Oak smiles.

"Nice to meet you, Bulbasaur." You grin. You've done it; befriended your first Pokemon! You thank Professor Oak before leading your new Pokemon outside and towards your first adventure.

You swipe the center PokeBall. It's warm to the touch. The warmth spreads up your arm, filling you with confidence. You know choosing Charmander was the right decision. Without wasting another second, you throw the ball in the air and call upon your new Pokemon. A young fire lizard appears in a flash of brilliant red, its tail burning bright and casting strange shadows across the lab. The Pokemon watches you cautiously.

Add Charmander to your team!

"Hi Charmander, I'm your new trainer," you say confidently, knowing the importance of earning your Pokemon's respect.

The orange lizard blinks for a moment and then steps forward, holding out a claw for you to shake. You take it immediately and the Pokemon snorts happily, a small burst of fire erupting from its mouth. You step back quickly to avoid being burned.

"It seems like Charmander is as excited as you are," Professor Oak smiles.

"I guess so!" you laugh and Charmander joins in.

You thank the Professor and turn around to see Charmander already waiting at the open laboratory door.

"Char, charmander!" your Pokemon cries happily as you follow it out of the lab and towards your first adventure.

You reach out and grab the PokeBall containing Squirtle, after all, everyone knows Water-types are the best! The PokeBall is cool and sends shivers up your arm. "Squirtle! I choose you!" you cry, holding the PokeBall out before you. A red light shoots from the front and materialises into a small, blue reptilian creature with a shell on its back.

"Hi, Squirtle, I'm your new trainer," you say excitedly, hardly believing you now have your very own Starter."Squirtle?" the Pokemon looks you up and down and then nods, seemingly pleased with itself, as if it's the one who has chosen you.

Add Squirtle to your team!

Professor Oak looks from you to Squirtle, and then back again. "Yes, I think Squirtle is the right Starter for you," he says, "It may be hard to earn Squirtle's trust, but once you do, you'll have a loyal friend for life."

You nod and thank the Professor, then turn towards your new Pokemon. "Are you ready to go Squirtle?" you ask, as you clip Squirtle's Pokeball onto your belt.

"Squir-tle," the Pokemon nods, saluting you cheekily.

"Then let's do it!" you grin, excitement rising. You leave the lab and head towards your first adventure.

You walk along Route One, enjoying the cool breeze and the warm sun on your back. Bulbasaur trots happily beside you as you walk. You're so excited to be on your journey that you almost forget to keep an eye out for wild Pokemon. Now as you walk, you scan the bushes to the sides of the path and the tree branches above for any sign of movement. All seems quiet though, and you and Bulbasaur continue your walk in silence.

After a while the warm sun starts feeling hot. You know you could use a quick drink. You look down at Bulbasaur and notice that its pace has slowed. "Would you like some water?" you ask as you slip your backpack off your shoulders.

Just as Bulbasaur nods, you hear a rustle behind you, and the patter of tiny feet. Your glance flies to Bulbasaur, who has also noticed the sound and stands alertly, ears pricked, staring at the bushes across the path. A wild Pokemon! It's your first chance to have a real Pokemon battle and you may even be able to catch it!

Your heart begins to pump with excitement, and maybe a little nervousness too. Who knows what kind of Pokemon could be hiding in there? You look down at Bulbasaur, ready to make a movie, and then hesitate.

Do you want to battle the wild Pokemon? After all, there'll be plenty of Pokemon to catch later and you really did want to get to Viridian City by nightfall. Do you challenge the wild Pokemon or continue without battling?

You decide to battle! You're a Pokemon Trainer after all, and you know Bulbasaur is going to need some training if you want to take on the Pokemon League.

"Are you ready to go, Bulbasaur?" you ask, your eyes focused on the rustling bushes.

The young green dinosaur nods, "Bulba!"

"Well, let's do it! Use a Tackle on those bushes!

Bulbasaur shakes its head and paws at the ground. Just before it can leap at the bushes, a flash of brown soars down from the sky and lands on a tree branch above your head.

"Pidgey~" the small bird Pokemon coos in a sing-song voice, tilting its head to one side to study you. After a moment, it ruffles its wings as if it's about to take off again.

You look down at Bulbasaur, whose staring right back, waiting for your instructions. You know there isn't time to challenge both Pokemon, you'll have to pick one before they both disappear!

Do you battle Pidgey or have Bulbasaur Tackle the rustling bushes?

You continue down the path toward Viridian City. It was mid-afternoon when you left Pallet Town and now the sun is starting to set. You really want to reach Viridian before nightfall, so you return Bulbasaur to its PokeBall for a rest and begin to jog. Just as the sky turns a a deep purple and the first stars can be seen, you see the lights of Viridian City in the distance.

It's dark by the time you reach the city boundary. You stumble over ledges and rocks, too tired to bother much where you place your feet. The inviting sliding doors of the the Pokemon Center beckon you in. You rent a room from a tired-looking Nurse Joy and before you have time to think over your first day of training, your eyes close of their own accord and you drift off to sleep...The next day dawns bright and sunny. You stand in the middle of Viridian City and wonder what to do first. A large map is posted helpfully on a sign to your left. You study it closely. You know there's a Gym in town. There's also supposed to be a forest full of Pokemon somewhere... do you search for the Gym, head for Route 22 or look for Viridian Forest?

Pidgey's right in front of you, it makes sense to battle it before it can fly off. "Try a Razor Leaf!" you instruct your Pokemon, pointing to the cream and brown bird.

Bulbasaur springs into action, shooting a flurry of sharp-tipped leaves straight at the bird. Pidgey takes to the air immediately, dodging the attack and swooping low for a Tackle. It smashes into Bulbasaur's side, knocking the Grass-type off its feet.

"Are you okay, Bulbasaur?" you cry worriedly, though you are impressed by the Pidgey's power. Bulbasaur nods and gets back to its feet. "Good! Let's try Razor Leaf again!" This time Bulbasaur's move hits its mark. The sharp leaves slice at the bird, catching it in mid air and causing it to drop lower towards the ground.

"Now you can hit it with Tackle!" you cry, and Bulbasaur obeys, launching itself at the hovering bird. The attack connects with a thud and Pidgey is knocked onto the ground. It gets to its feet and stands there panting, one eye shut tight in pain.

Finally, Pidgey looks weak enough. You know this is your chance to catch it! You snatch an empty PokeBall from your belt and throw it at the bird. The Pokemon is sucked in by a red light and the PokeBall wriggles slowly from side to side as the Pokemon inside struggles to escape. You wait with baited breath, and then...

Just when you think Pidgey will be caught, the ball bursts open and the bird soars straight into the sky, escaping from battle. You frown in disappointment, wondering if Pidgey had pretended to be injured in order to flee...

"Saur, bulba..." Bulbasaur nudges your leg as if apologising for letting Pidgey escape.

"It's not your fault, you did great, Bulbasaur!" you smile, patting the Pokemon on the head. "There'll be plenty of other Pokemon to catch."

Bulbasaur nods and you offer it a drink from the bottle in your bag. "Now, let's get to Viridian City!"

You ignore the Pidgey and instruct Bulbasaur to Tackle the bushes. Your Pokemon obeys immediately, leaping headfirst into the scrub. The impact causes the Pidgey above your head to flap its wings agitatedly and take the sky. A purple blur shoots out from the bushes and across the path. It's only visible for a few seconds, but you know it must be a Rattata.

Your Pokemon appears in the bushes, looking slightly dazed after its Tackle. It shakes its head and peers up at you, waiting for further instruction.

You haven't taken your eyes off the bush, which you know Rattata is hiding in. Quietly, you motion to Bulbasaur to sneak up on it.

Bulbasaur creeps slowly toward the bush, a determined frown on its face. Just as its about to pounce into the greenery, the purple blur erupts fom the bush dashing at Bulabsaur in a brilliant display of Quick Attack. Bulbasaur's hit hard and stumbles, giving the rat time to dash back to the other side of the path and disappear into the bushes. You hear the pitter-patter of its feet die away as it disappears into the forest by the side of the route.

"Bulbasaur, bulba." Bulbasaur looks at the ground dejectly.

You reach down and pat the Pokemon on the head. "Don't worry, Bulbasaur. We'll get the next one." You smile. You grab the water bottle from your backpack and give the thirsty Grass-type a drink. Bulbasaur perks up immediately and runs a few paces ahead, eager to continue your journey.

"That's the spirit!" you encourage, swinging your backpack onto your shoulder. "Let's keep going."

You decide to check out the Gym. After a short walk you find yourself in front of an impressive-looking building. A sign to your left declares that this is the Viridian City Gym. You walk up to the front doors, expecting them to open automaticaly, but nothing happens, so you knock a few times and step back.

You can hear something moving inside...

You wait a few minutes, but no one answers. Deciding the Gym must be closed, you look around, but there's no one to answer your questions.

There's no way anyone here will be taking your challenge, so you head slowly back towards the center of the city, enjoying the early morning sun. You stand in the shade of the Pokemon Center as you decide whether to head to Viridian Forest or over towards Route 22.

You walk off towards Route 22. The track is wide and winding and small ponds can be seen through trees to your left. You see some tall grass up ahead and keep your eyes peeled, searching for any glimpse of a wild Pokemon. After a short time you reach a large stone building.

The dark stone looks rather intimadating, but you've come this far... you push open the door and find yourself in a cool atrium. A high glass ceiling lets in light, giving the whole place the feeling of a giant greenhouse. Up ahead is a reception desk and behind that, a guard standing beside an ornate wooden and glass door.

Do you walk up to the desk, head for the door, go back and explore Viridian City or head for Viridian Forest?

You head north from Viridian City, following the signs to the forest. Eventually you reach a gatehouse. A sign is plastered to the brickwork. You keep walking until you're close enough to read it.

Welcome to Viridian Forest,
This forest is a natural maze.

You don't have any Antidote, but your Bulbasaur is a Poison-type, so you should be alright...

You enter the gatehouse, which is empty except for a young man with shaggy black hair. He's sitting on a chair with a Spearow perched on his shoulder. The Pokemon watches you with its sharp, beady eyes. The trainer is dressed in dark clothes and you can see he already has four PokeBalls on his belt. You're eager to meet fellow trainers, but something in his green eyes as he turns to look at you stops you from going over. He seems to regard you with mild distaste. But that's impossible, you don't even know him! Without a word, he turns away, gets to his feet and walks out the door to the forest. After a few moments, you shrug and follow him.

When you exit the gatehouse, there's no sign of the strange trainer. There are trees everywhere and the thick canopy blocks out most of the light in this part of the forest. The air is full with bird calls and rustling undergrowth. The place must be swarming with Pokemon! You know a wild Pokemon could appear at any moment, so you grab Bulbasaur's PokeBall from your belt and release the young dinosaur.

"Bulbaaaa," Bulbasaur yawns groggily, then blinks a few times and takes in its surroundings.

"Ready to explore Viridian Forest?" you ask.

You approach the ornate door. As you get a few steps away, the guard moves across to block your way. He wears a shiny blue uniform and a PokeBall badge with a crest in the center is pinned to his uniform.

"Can I help you?" he asks. "You'll need one badge to pass through this gate."

You shake your head, you have no badges yet. "Just looking," you reply.

"Well this it the Pokemon League gate! There's no point hanging about here if you haven't any badges," the guard says suspiciously. "Everyone knows the Viridian Leader's disappeared. You'll want to head for Pewter City," he adds helpfully.

You nod, "Thanks..." and turn to walk away.

"Good luck then," the guard calls after you. "Come back when you get more badges."

You head for the front door of the building, feeling excited at the idea of earning a badge in Pewter City. It was about time you continued to Viridian Forest, anyway...

You head to the reception desk. A young lady dressed in blue greets you warmly. "How may I help you today?" she asks.

"I was just wondering what this building was," you say, looking up at the glass ceiling.

"Why, this is the Pokemon league gate!" The woman smiles. "For every badge you earn, you'll be able to travel a little further along the path to the Pokemon League. But you'll need 8 badges to get to the end."

Your gaze travels over her head and settles on the guarded ornate door behind her.

"Yes," she says, noticing you looking, "That's the first checkpoint. You can only get through there when you have one badge."

"Oh, thanks," you reply, realising you'll need to go back to Viridian City for now.

"And if you didn't know, the Viridian Gym is currently closed, so Pewter City should be your first destination."

You thank her again and turn towards the exit.

"No problem. Good luck!" the woman smiles widely as she calls after you. You wonder how many people pass through here. The woman must have a very boring job....

With one last glance at the ornate door you exit the building and decide to go straight to Viridian Forest and towards your first Gym battle!

Bubasaur nods, and so you begin the slow journey over thistles and tall grass, ducking under branches, forcing your way through brambles and pushing through small berry bushes. Bulbasaur follows you without complaint. It seems cheerful surrounded by the forest.

After a good hour of bush-bashing you begin to tire. You notice now that the tree canopy is letting through more light. This part of the forest is less leafy, with lots of small scrubs and immensely tall, thin trees. You seem to be in woodland. You indicate a large tree trunk to Bulbasaur, and the two of you sit at its base. You lean back against it and catch your breath. Beside you, Bulbasaur rolls in the dewy grass happily, then sprawls lazily on its tummy, its feet spread out under it as it absorbs the midday sun.

You shut your eyes, listening to the calls of wild Pokemon is strangely relaxing. Before you know it, you drift into a light sleep...

You awake with a start when something pokes you in the side. Bulbasaur is sitting upright now, and alert, prodding you with a thin, dark-green vine from the base of its bulb. You rub your eyes and look around. It seems you slept for quite a while... the sky is tinged with yellow and the calls of wild Pokemon are amplified in the still dusk. You get to your feet. It'll soon be dark and you don't much like the idea of spending a night in the forest.

"We better keep going," you tell Bulbasaur, and the Pokemon agrees with a quick nod. You're too busy dusting yourself off to notice Bulbasaur glance over its shoulder nervously.

Soon you're travelling through the forest again. Darkness seems to fall quickly and you you're losing light every minute. Soon it will be too dark to see and you'll be forced to stop for the night. Still, you hope to get as close as possible to Pewter City before then. Especially as you've had this nagging feeling of being watched...

Continue.
Eventually night falls and the forest, which looked so peaceful in daytime, is suddenly filled with strange and frightening sounds. Shadows creep across trees and every rustle of a bush and snap of a twig is amplified. Bulbasaur seems more nervous now, and you're beginning to feel a little worried yourself... but you don't want Bulbasaur to see that so you keep walking, encouraging the Pokemon with talk of clean Pokemon Center sheets and a hot meal.

Eventually you find yourself back in thick, dark forest. The moonlight is completely blocked out here and you can barely see the path in front of you. You feel something brush against your leg and jump slightly, before realising its just Bulbasaur wanting to be closer to you in the dark. You reach down and scoop up the little Pokemon. Having Bulbasaur does make you feel a lot safer, but you know that it's only young and hasn't travelled before. You don't blame it for being a little scared.

You continue on in silence for a while and your eyes begin to adjust to the dim light. Now you can make out the silhouettes of Rattata scurrying away through the undergrowth as you approach, and you've identified an echoing flapping sound as a small flock of Pidgey soaring through the canopy. As you begin to identify the sounds, the forest seems less scary. You begin to feel new confidence, and Bulbasaur feels it too and starts to calm down.

Just as you're beginning to relax, a twig snaps loudly just a few metres to your left. You stop immediately and the sound echoes through the forest, bouncing from tree to tree. You step silently toward the sound, knowing now for sure that you weren't imagining being followed. Bulbasaur jumps from your arms and walks ahead of you protectively, any fear it once felt diminished by its instinct to protect you.

You finally come to the spot where you think the sound came from, but there's nothing there. Bulbasaur searches the nearby bushes, but there's no sign of anything. Just as you're about to give up, moonlight glints off a scrap of red fabric snagged on a bush. You reach down and free it, turning it over in your hand. Bulbasaur trots over, sniffs the fabric and looks up at you puzzedly.

You shrug, suddenly feeling very tired. You and Bulbasaur continue down the path only a little way before you decide its time to stop. You spread out your sleeping bag under a large, leafy tree off the side of the path. You slide in and Bulbasaur curls up at your side. Feeling relatively safe and extremely tired, you drift off into a dreamless sleep...

Continue.
You awaken as the first rays of light brighten the sky. You watch the sky change colour for a while, before rolling over and waking Bulbasaur. You roll up your sleepingbag and store it. Bulbasaur yawns groggily beside you, then shakes its head and begins exploring the nearby bushes.

Once packed, you and Bulbasaur head back to the path and continue towards Pewter City. All around you, the forest awakens. The low drone of buzzing bug Pokemon can be heard underneath all the sound of flapping and rustling leaves. You know Bug-types will be active at this time of the morning. You still haven't caught your first Pokemon and you hope to do so soon.

The morning passes uneventfully. Twice you caught sight of Pidgey, but they took to the sky before you had a chance to attack. You even came across a Kakuna, but didn't want to risk waking the Beedrill sleeping nearby by battling it. Just when you're about to give up on ever catching a Pokemon, Bulbasaur nudges your leg and you stop walking automatically.

You follow Bulbasaur's gaze and notice a large green bulge on the underside of a giant leaf. Steeping closer, you realise it's a small, green Caterpie. The Pokemon continues to dine on the leaf, paying you and Bulbasaur no attention.

"Let's try and catch it!" you say, "Now Bulbasaur, use Vine Whip to grab it!"

Bulbasaur extends a vine and wraps it around Caterpie, who finally takes some notice of your arrival. The bug strugles for a moment as Bulbasaur holds it in midair, before chomping down on Bulbasaur's vine as if it was the second course. Bulbasaur yowls in pain, releasing the bug immediately. Caterpie looks angry at being interrupted now and shoots a sticky white film at Bulbasaur, who's too slow to dodge. Bulbasaur struggles to move, but it's rooted to the spot. Caterpie launches itself at Bulbasaur, hitting it in the face with a Tackle.

"Are you alright?" you ask Bulbasaur nervously, "Can you get free?"

Bulbasaur struggles against the String Shot again, but it's no use.

"Don't worry, just use Razor Leaf!"

Sharp tipped leaves shoot from Bulbasaur's sides, slicing the white film into pieces and spraying Caterpie all at once.

"Now finish with Tackle!"

Finally freed, Bulbasaur jumps forward, ramming the little bug and sending it flying. You run after Caterpie, ripping a PokeBall of your belt in the process. "PokeBall Go!"

The PokeBall hits Caterpie, causing the bug to dematerialise into red light. The Pokemon disappears into the ball, which rocks slowly on the forest floor. You look over at Bulbasaur who's panting slightly.

The ball continues to shake... one... two... three... PING!

Add Caterpie to your team!

You almost can't believe it when the ball stops moving. It isn't until Bulbasaur prods you that you snap out of it and run forward. You pick up the PokeBall and release the Pokemon inside.

Caterpie appears in a flash of red. Bulbasaur wanders over to it shyly and the two have a conversation you don't understand.

After a while, you walk over and introduce yourself to Caterpie. The bug seems pleased to have a trainer. Bulbasaur looks on approvingly.

You return Caterpie so that it can rest and clip the PokeBall onto your belt.

"You did great, Bulbasaur," you say, patting the Pokemon on the head. "You should rest too." You grab Bulbasaur's PokeBall.

Just as you return Bulbasaur, you hear a rustling in the bushes. All at once, a young girl appears, a wide smile on her freckled face. "Oi, you're a trainer, yeah? Wanna have a battle?"

You know your Pokemon are tired from battling, but this would be your very first trainer battle... Do you accept or decline the challenge?

"Thanks anyway, but my Pokemon are a little tired..." you say.

"Oh, no problem," the girl replies. "The forest can be pretty tough. I'm Myra by the way."

You introduce yourself to Myra and explain that you've only just begun your journey with Bulbasaur.

"Oh, I'm a beginner too." Myra smiles. "I chose Squirtle. Well I should get going. Squirtle and I need to do some training before we challenge Brock. He's the Gym Leader of Pewter City."

You nod, "Well, nice to meet you. Good luck with Brock."

"You too," Myra says. "Maybe I'll see you around sometime."

She disappears into the forest and you continue towards Pewter City.

"That sounds great!" you reply.

"How about a one-on-one battle?" the girl asks. "Oh, I'm Myra by the way!"

You introduce yourself to Myra and agree to the battle.

"Well let's go!" Myra says, stepping away to give room for the battle. "I choose you, Squirtle!"

She throws a PokeBall into the air. A small blue turtle appears in a flash of red.

"Squirt, squirtle!" it cries.

You grab two PokeBalls from your belt. Bulbasaur had a tough battle this morning, but it would have a type advantage against Squirtle. And Caterpie might still be tired, but it would be good training. Do you send out Caterpie or Bulbasaur?

"Go Caterpie!" you cry, releasing the corresponding PokeBall. Caterpie appears in a flash of light.

"Cater, cater," it mumbles to itself determinedly. You think you made the right choice, Caterpie seems eager to battle.

"Squirtle, use Water Gun!" Myra cries.

"Caterpie, dodge it!" you counter.

And so the battle begins... Caterpie follows all your instructions well and you're impressed by its endurance. However, it's clear that Squirtle has had a lot of training. Its attacks hit hard and fast and Caterpie doesn't know enough moves to counter effectively.

Finally, Caterpie collapses after taking a particularly strong Water Gun attack.

You smile to yourself. Even though you lost, Caterpie seems to have a lot of potential. At the other side of the battle field, Myra and Squirtle are cheering and giving each other high-fives. You thank Caterpie for battling well, return it and walk over to shake her hand.

"Great battle," Myra smiles, taking your hand. "Your Caterpie did really well. Have you been training long?" She's surprised when you admit you just caught it before she challenged you. "Well I think it's going to be very strong one day." She smiles. "I look forward to challenging you again when that time comes." Squirtle nods in agreement.

"We'll be ready for you next time," you reply.

"We're off to do some more training before challenging Brock," Myra says, "He's the Leader of the Pewter Gym."

"That's where I'm headed," you reply. "Good luck with your training."

"Good luck with Brock!" Myra says. "See you around!"

She and Squirtle disappear back into the bushes and you continue toward Pewter City.

"Go Bulbasaur!" you cry, releasing the corresponding PokeBall. Bulbasaur appears before you. When it sees Squirtle, its smile changes to a determined frown.

"You can do this, Bulbasaur," you say encouragingly. Bulbasaur nods.

Across the field, Myra calls to Squirtle. "Let's begin with Tackle!"

"Use Razor Leaf to stop it!" you instruct.

Squirtle dashes forward, but Bulbasaur shoots out sharp-tipped leaves in Squirtle's path, forcing the Pokemon to stop and dodge to the left and right.

"Now hit it with Vine Whip!"

Before Squirtle can respond, two Vines shoot out of Bulbasaur's sides and slam into the Water-type. Squirtle slides backwards and lands at Myra's feet. In a second it's back up, frowinging angrily at Bulbasaur.

"Use Water Gun!" Myra calls. The force of the jet erupting from Squirtle's mouth hits Bulbasaur square in the face. You can see how powerful Squirtle's attack is. Lucky Bulbasaur's resistant and shakes it off without too much trouble.

The battle continues evenly for a while. It's clear both Pokemon are evenly matched, but tiring. Both are panting heavily now.

"Bulbasaur, let's finish this!" you call. "Hit it directly with Razor Leaf!"

"Dodge it, Squirtle!" Myra calls.

Squirtle tries its best to dodge the leaves, ducking and weaving as much as possible, but it's too tired to move fast enough. The leaves slam into Squirtle's stomach, sending the Pokemon flying backwards. It doesn't get up.

"Great work, Bulbasaur!" you grin like a maniac, and the Pokemon jumps into your arms for a well deserved hug. Across the field, Myra returns Squirtle with a smile and walks over. She congratulates you and shakes your hand.

"You and Squirtle were tough," you say. "You must have been training hard."

"We've been training before challenging Brock," Myra admits, "He's the Leader of the Pewter Gym. I can tell that you and Bulbasaur are a great team," she adds. "Next time we're gonna beat you though!""We'll see about that!" you smile back. Myra explains that she and Squirtle are off to do more training and heads back into the forest. You wave as she disappears and then turn to follow the path to Pewter City.

You follow the path, thinking about your upcoming Gym battle with Brock. You're starting to feel quite nervous by the time you spot the gatehouse leading to Pewter City.

The sun is high in the sky when the enter the gatehouse doors. Inside it's warm and light, a stark contrast to the dimness of the forest. You continue out of the empty building, following the signs to Pewter City. You round a corner and spot the ref-roofed Pokemon Center ahead. You pick up the pace, wanting to get your Pokemon healed before challenging Brock.

Once the pink-haired nurse inside hands you back your fighting fit Pokemon, you head out of the center. You can't believe you're just about to have your very first Gym battle! You can see the Gym ahead. It's a dark stone building with a pink roof. Pewter City Gym is cut into the rock above the door.

You step forward and the rocky door slides open to admit you. Inside it's cool and dim. The walls are made of stone and ground is rocky and covered in large boulders. You realise that this must be the battle field! You don't notice the figure at the other end of the field until he speaks.

"Welcome challenger," You're startled by his voice echoing around the large room. "I am Brock, Gym Leader of Pewter City. Have you come to challenge my gym?"

"Yes," you reply, finally seeing him standing on a slightly elevated rock shelf at the other end of the field. You introduce yourself and request a two-on-two battle.

"I accept your challenge," Brock replies, his voice sounding impressive in the quiet Gym. "We will each use two Pokemon. If you win, I will award you the Boulder Badge. Let us begin!"

He throws a PokeBall into the air. In a flash of red light, a large round boulder with two arms appears before Brock. You recognise it as a Geodude. Both of your Pokemon are rested and ready for battle. Do you send out Caterpie or Bulbasaur?

You decide to start with Caterpie. "PokeBall go!" you cry, releasing a red and white orb into the arena. Caterpie bursts forth in a flash of crimson light and stands ready, facing off with the boulder Pokemon.

"Geodude, Rock Throw!" Brock calls out.

"Dodge it Caterpie, hide behind the rocks!"

Caterpie ducks behind a particularly large boulder just in time. The rocks that Geodude hurled at your Pokemon land just metres away. You wince as they smash into the ground and crumble. Poor Caterpie could have been squashed...

"Geodude, Tackle it!" Brock calls straight away.

Caterpie glances at you, wondering what to do. "Get ready, Caterpie," you call softly... "Now! String Shot!" you yell when Geodude is close enough. A thick white film covers the boulder Pokemon, blinding it and causing it to drop to the ground. You watch as it struggles to scrape the webbing out of its eyes. "Great work!" you cry happily. "Now Tackle it!"

Caterpie rushes out of its hiding place and slams into the rock-type. Geodude doesn't even seem to notice the attack as it slowly frees itself from the String Shot. Caterpie Tackles again and again, but you know it's not having any effect. You grit your teeth, trying to decide what to do next, when Geodude decides for you. Finally clearing its eyes, it lunges at Caterpie, picking it up in its fists.

"Smack down, Geodude!" Brock calls, as if this was his plan all along. Geodude slams the bug mercilessly into the rocky ground. Caterpie's cry of pain echoes around the gym.

"Caterpie..." you cry, still not sure what to do. Geodude smashes the Pokemon into the ground again. "Use String Shot again!"

Caterpie tilts its head back and shoots the white webbing into the air. It comes down in waves, covering both Geodude and Caterpie in a silk cocoon. Geodude is unable to move and drops back to the ground. You know this is your chance to return Caterpie, but nothing happens when you point your PokeBall at the white mass. All at once the white casing begins to glow. You look fearfully at Brock, wondering what attack Geodude is performing now, but he looks as confused as you are.

Continue.
The glowing stops and there is a horrible ripping sound as Geodude breaks through the white cocoon and frees itself. You look in shock at the green crescent clutched in Geodude's arm.

Your Caterpie has evolved!

"Meta...pod..." the Pokemon croaks.

"Congratulations," Brock says, "but the battle must go on! Geodude, finish it with Smack Down!"

"Use Harden, Metapod!" you cry. Metapod glows a pearly colour before it's smashed into the rocks again. Despite its tough skin, you know Metapod is in trouble. It has no attacks that will harm Geodude. You know what you have to do...

"Return, Metapod!" you cry. "You did great. Now, go Bulbasaur!"

Bulbasaur appears before you, almost bouncing in excitement. Geodude looked momentarily confused as Metapod disappeared from its grasp, but now its eyes narrow at Bulbasaur.

"Tackle, Geodude!" Brock calls.

"You know what to do, Bulbasaur! Use Razor Leaf!"

The familiar leaves shoot out of the sides of Bulbasaur's bulb. Despite Geodude's rocky appearance, they leave large red gashes in the Pokemon's skin and you know the attack is super effective. Geodude stops mid-Tackle and drops to the ground, unmoving.

"You did it, Bulbasaur!" you cry, as Brock returns the fainted Pokemon.

"You've done well so far," he says, "But now the real game begins. Onix, go!"

A giant rock-snake appears on the field and slithers between the boulders toward your Pokemon. "Razor Leaf!" you call to Bulbasaur, but as the leaves approach, Onix tunnels into the ground and disappears. Once the attack stops it reappears before Brock, who is smirking slightly. You try another Razor Leaf but the same thing happens.

You need to think of a strategy, and fast. Do you use Vine Whip? Or try Leech Seed?

You decide to send out Bulbasaur. You know it has a huge advantage against Brock's Geodude.

"Geodude, Rock Throw!" Brock calls out.

"Smash them away with Vine Whip!" you cry. Bulbasaur obeys, slicing the rocks up in midair so that only dust falls to the ground. "Now, Razor Leaf!"

"Dodge it, and use Rock Throw again!" Brock calls.

The two Pokemon seem to be engaged in some kind of strange dance. Both dodge the others attacks while simultaneously sending flurries of leaves or handfuls of rocks at their opponent. Soon both Pokemon are panting and you know you need to finish it before Bulbasaur tires out completely.

Just as Geodude dodges a particular sharp leaf, you instruct Bulbasaur to use Vine Whip. It wraps its vines around one of Geodude's arms, and with much effort, manages to lift the Pokemon high into the sky. "Now, slam it down!" you instruct.

Geodude struggles to free itself, but Bulbasaur's grip is tight. The rock-type is flung hard into sharp boulders and doesn't rise.

Brock returns it, saying something to it inside its PokeBall that you can't hear. "You've done well so far," he calls to you, "But now the real game begins. Onix, go!"

A giant rock-snake appears on the field and slithers between the boulders toward your Pokemon. Its mere size is intimidating.

"Bulbasaur, return," you say. "Take a rest. Now, let's go Caterpie!"

Caterpie bursts forth in a flash of crimson light and stands ready, facing off with the giant snake. Onix slams its tail into a nearby rock. The tremors cause Caterpie to fly off the ground. You wonder if you've made the right decision...

"Onix! Tackle it!" Brock calls.

"Caterpie, String Shot when it gets close enough!" you instruct.

When Onix is only metres away, Caterpie shoots a white web at the Pokemon's face. To your surprise, Onix pulls up short, Swinging its tail around and slamng Caterpie into a nearby rock. The film lands harmlessly on Onix's rocky tail.

Continue.
Caterpie gets up slowly, and Onix is already coming in for another attack.

"Dodge it!" you call desperately, but Caterpie isn't moving. Instead it begins to spin on the spot, shooting its String Shot in every direction. The white film forms a protective cocoon around the Pokemon, and stops Onix from coming any closer. You watch in astonishment as Caterpie's String Shot capsule brings to glow. Its shape changes before your eyes, and when the glowing stops, a green crescent has replaced the white cocoon...

Your Caterpie has evolved!

"Congratulations," Brock says, "but the battle must go on! Onix, use Dig!"

You look at Metapod in awe, but you know this isn't the time to admire your new Pokemon. Onix is closing in fast, and there's nowhere for it to escape to. "Use Harden Metapod!" you call.

Metapod glows a pearly colour and its shell takes on a metallic appearance. Seconds later, Onix erupts from the ground under Metapod, sending the bug flying. Metapod lands among smashed boulders in a plume of dust. Surprisingly, it's still moving slightly. "Meta...pod..." you can hear it calling.

"Onix, Magnitude!" Brock yells.

Harden may have saved you once, but you know it won't stop Onix again. The Magnitude attack causes the whole Gym to shake. The stone walls crumble and rocks fall from the ceiling, crushing Metapod below. When the dust clears, Metapod is unable to fight. "You did good, Metapod," you say, returning it to its PokeBall. Now, go Bulbasaur!"

Bulbasaur reappears before you. It looks up nervously at the giant rock snake hovering above.

Onix falls to the ground and doesn't stir. Brock returns it without a word. After a few moments, he bows and beckons you over.

"Congratulations once again," he smiles now. "You've defeated the Pewter City Gym, which means, you have earned yourself the Bouulder Badge." He hands you a small, grey octagonal badge. You take it and thank him for the battle. Your heart is pounding with excitement. You did it! You earned your first badge!

Add the Boulder Badge to your Badge Case.

"You seem to be a promising trainer," he says. "I think you'll do well at the Pokemon League. This is only the first step of course. There are still seven badges to collect.

You nod and thank him once again before heading for the exit, with Bulbasaur at your side.

"Good luck!" Brock calls after you.

You decide to head for the Pokemon Center. Metapod and Bulbasaur deserve a nice, long rest!
