Orangejello (Or-on-gee-low)

He was homeless and an orphan with no one to comfort him but his two brothers. That was when the humans found them, cold and helpless. The three siblings were brought to the Humane Society and locked in a room with a half dozen other cats. Their stories were all the same. They were born in a home, and the humans couldn't afford another mouth to feed, so they were dropped off here, now eagerly awaiting their future owners.

Day after day, OJ waited with his two brothers; humans came and left, sometimes taking a kitten home with them. They were eventually moved from the kitten room to the nursery, which meant that they were growing up. The three didn't trust humans; they had no reason to. No one took the time to associate with them, so why should they try? Everything changed when they were six months old...

***

It had been a tough month in the Smith house. I had come home to find my twelve year-old cat dead on the carpet in my room, and not two weeks later the rabbit also died of old age. It was rough, but seeing how heartbroken we were, my dad agreed to let us get another cat. So the search began. At first we considered a 'problem' cat named Campbell; the problem with him was that he couldn't be trusted around small children. The next cat we looked at was a dark brown tabby with beautiful markings. He was almost a year old and very friendly; our decision made, we left. The next day my dad went to pick up the cat, but apparently he had already been adopted, so in an impulsive decision, he chose the six-month-old kitten, OJ.

***

Hiding in the litter box, OJ closed his eyes and hoped that the humans would leave. They didn't. Opening his eyes, he realized that he was the one being gawked at. Moments later, the chase began. A worker from the shelter had a carrier in hand and wasn't afraid to use it. Two hours later, OJ found himself exhausted, scared, and unfortunately in the crate. The man who was there a few days before was the one to carry him outside the shelter, and beside him walked a girl. She was oddly excited and concerned at the same time. Very strange.

Inside the vehicle, OJ cried as fear raked his body, yet the girl, who sat beside him, spoke gentle words and tempted him with treats, but he was far too petrified to eat. After what seemed like hours, the vehicle stopped and he was carried inside. The carrier door opened, and OJ made a run for it, hiding under the stairs, watching so that the humans didn't get close. The girl called to him, but eventually gave up and sat at her computer, on the floor, at the other end of the room. She played soothing music and spoke gently to him, but the wouldn't he fooled that easily. Around bedtime, she set up a water dish, a food dish, a litter box, a scratching post, and an assortment of toys before leaving the room and closing the door behind her. Once positive he was alone, he took out his frustration on the scratching post.

On the second day she had shone the laser pointer under the stairs and he chased it, but only when he knew he was out of her reach, he wouldn't be tricked. It was the third day that things changed. For one, she had started to call him Orangejello and two, when she held out those treats this time, he put aside his fears and ate them from her hands. They were worth it. A moment later the girl was petting him and they were playing with the laser again. who knew humans could be so cool?

Present Time

Curled up at the foot of her bed, Orangejello wondered if life could get any better. He had a dog to torment, someone to give him food, someone to change his litter, and someone who spoiled him with treats and toys. The last was his favourite; the girl who had been there for him at the beginning of his new life. His favourite thing to do was follow her around and beg for attention, she gave the best back scratches. He hated when she wasn't home. At first it was hard to get used to. He'd run and launch himself at the door, willing it to budge, but it never did. So instead, he would sit and cry, waiting impatiently for her return. There are somethings in life that you just can't live without, and for us, it's each other.
