You can't keep me locked up forever

Well, now you've done it. That shortcut through the woods that was supposed to get you to the shopping center more quickly? The one you thought would save you about thirty minutes on a walk that normally only took an hour or so? That turned out to be a three-hour long detour that has led you to what must be the middle of nowhere, or somewhere worse. To complete the trifectra of misfortune, the sky above is darkening quickly, angry looking clouds gathering together with the unmistakeable rumbling of thunder. Just perfect. Ahead of you, on an overgrown path that clearly hasn't seen traffic of any kind in months at least, probably longer, is an old, eerie-looking building...it has a clinical look to it's design, more functionial than attractive. The large windows, albeit with iron bars caging them in, remind you a bit of a hospital. Could this be the abandoned mental ward you heard of in those urban legends everyone around Centropolis loved to tell their friends when they went out camping? Probably not...everyone knows those legends aren't real, of course. That would be silly! Those stories were just made up to frighten scaredy-cats, and you're not one of those, now are you? So what to do now, sweet protagonist?

Why, go inside, of course! No reason not to...after all, those stories are a load of bunk. There isn't a zombie-vampire-serial killer-masked vigilante-crazy person haunting the abandoned mental hospital, having been forgotten and left there after the place was abandoned, or taken over by zombies created by medical experiments, or that one psycho got loose and killed everyone, still living there to this day...None of those things happened, so there clearly is nothing to worry about! You may find a map inside, to get you back on track to the shopping center, or you might find some interesting stuff left behind by the old inhabitants or even other visitors, like creepy half-rotted teddy bears, those chairs with the restraints built in, obscene graffiti spray-painted on the walls, who knows? At the very least, you should go in and take some pictures on your cell phone to show your friends. Maybe make up a few scary stories of your own to impress them with! That'll prove you're not a scaredy-cat! But...well, is it really necessary? A crack of lightning dangerously close by makes up your mind for you immediately, sending you dashing to the doorway.

The door creaks like the bones of an old, dying man when you push your shoulder against it. An involuntary shudder goes down your spine...it's just the noise, of course, that grinding of the hinges would give anyone a little chill, it's not as though you're afraid or anything! Moving carefully inside, you inspect the front lobby...clearly this was some kind of medical facility. The waiting room chairs are arranged neatly against the wall, except one or two that seem to have fallen over. The chairs look decidedly uncomfortable, as most doctor's office chairs are known to be, the leaking stuffing from the meager cushions not making them look any more inviting. A clipboard with indecipherable scribbles hangs on the wall...probably the patient sign-in sheet. Nothing unusual there, except that one scribble that looks suspiciously like a very spindly, dark-haired girl...but you can't really tell, the entire sheet is very scribbly and crinkled, the edges crumbling up and yellow with age. Shrugging to yourself, you take out your cell phone and snap a picture of it, the first piece of evidence in your trial against being a wimp! The camera-shutter noise of the phone echoes eerily in the empty room, the sound of thunder outside oddly muted. The walls must be pretty thick to keep it so quiet inside, when you can tell from a glance out one of the dusty windows that it's raining violently outside...it's almost as dark as night now, heavy raindrops pelting against the windows as if trying to beat them down. The occasional flash of lightning lights up the interior of the waiting room. Well, nothing creepy about that! To prove it to yourself, you're going to walk past the reception desk and through the big double-doors, into the main part of the building. That'll show...whoever it is you're trying to impress, even though you're all alone. That'll show them!

The doors screech in protest as you heave them open, almost like a warning. More chills run down your spine, as you suddenly get the odd feeling of being...watched. As though you're not alone anymore. Well, obviously you are, since you can't see anyone! Granted, the pitch darkness of the hallway you've entered might have something to do with that...thank goodness for technology! You turn on the flashlight on your cell phone, moving the beam of light around cautiously as you slowly step down the hall. Heavy-looking doors line the hallway, the first two on either side leading to what you identify as examination rooms...standard looking enough, though the exam tables have restraints built into them. Past the first few sets of doors though, all the rest seemed to lead to tiny rooms, with only a small sink, a dreadfully uncomfortable-looking bed, most of which had stuffing and springs jutting through the worn out cloth, a few containing a small dresser or desk, but most lacking those, almost all having a restraining device of some kind built into the bed, or the wall immediately above it. Several have old, rotted padding on the walls. Clearly, cells for the patients. Some had suspicious dark brown splotches on the walls and bed, something that looked a lot like dried blood...but, of course, it wasn't! It couldn't be. That'd be silly, and you're far too smart to believe such nonsense, aren't you? Naturally. It was probably mold, seeing how old and dirty everything was.

Continuing through another set of double-doors at the end of the hall, you found a much more spacious room, with different little areas set up with chairs, tables, and such...probably the common area, where everyone spent the day talking, drawing, doing whatever else the patients were allowed to do to alleviate boredom. Aha, you knew it! Rotting teddy bear, dead center in one of the moldy old armchairs, complete with obnoxious paisley bow. You snap a picture, the bright flash illuminating more of the room than the meager flashlight. A chill runs up your spine as you think you can see a shape - almost like the drawing on the clipboard in the waiting room - skitter around the corner of your vision. Turning around quickly, waving the flashlight, you can see nothing. Just your imagination, obviously. The dark, crushingly quiet atmosphere must be getting to you. Still, you can't really leave until the rain dies down, at least, so you might as well keep exploring.

Checking the doors leads to a cafeteria with trays and various utensils left scattered around (including a fork you stepped on, leading to an undignified yelp and some creative shouting...you could have sworn you heard a feminine giggling, but when you tried to listen for it, it wasn't there) , a few more examination rooms, what looked like a councelor's office, and a few other odds and ends standard to a hospital. Simple enough. Opening the last door leads to a long, narrow hallway...much like the first, but there were no doors lining this one, and in the darkness you could not see the end. Curiosity drove you to slowly step further into the darkness, only the small beam provided by your cell phone lighting the way. After what seems like an eternity, the only sound being your echoing footsteps, and a faint rumble of thunder outside every once in a while, you come to the end of the hall. The only thing visible at the end is an enormous, heavy door. The door looks much thicker and heavier than the rest, as if made to contain something far more dangerous than any of the other patients. You haul at the door with all your might, but it only opens slightly, far too small an opening for you to squeeze through. Peeking through the slit of the opening, you shine the flashlight of the cell phone through. It looks basically like the other rooms you've seen...stained stuffing leaking from the padded walls, an old sink, and a bed...though there seems to be a lot more of those odd brownish stains in this room. Something glints in the light, and you focus your flashlight on it more to try and figure out what it is.

A large butcher's knife, covered in a dark substance that is clearly not mold, sits on the floor within easy reach of the bed.

You feel like a bucket of ice-water has been dumped on you and quickly pull away from the door, making your way out of the long hallway as quickly as you can. There's no mistaking it now...you can hear something behind you, closing in fast. Darting through the rooms, almost tripping over a fallen chair in the common room, you finally burst into the lobby. You immediately head to the exit doors - to heck with the rain! You'd rather brave that then whatever....THING is in here! You have just gotten your hand on the door when there is a crash behind you. Spinning around, your finger accidentally hits the camera button on your phone, the loud click of the camera shutter drowned out by a terrified cry.

The storm outside continued raging on, the front door of the abandoned mental hospital left adjar. A flash of lightning illuminated a small object sitting in the open doorway - a cell phone. Rain pattered down on it, quickly getting into the circuts. A single, eerie image was visible on the screen - a pale face, framed by stringy dark hair, with black empty eyes and a sadistic grin. The image flickered and distorted briefely, then finally went dark as the water shorted out the power.
