Nótt was placed in the sky many, many thousands of years ago by the god Odin. With her faithful steed Hrímfaxi, she has long been the caretaker of night, drawing it across the sky so every star shown for gods and men alike.
When other worlds came into peril, they pleaded for the help of the gods (even from other realms). Odin took Nótt from the sky and began to send her to the worlds that needed assistance. She had just enough power to be of use to mortals, but not enough to take away dire protection from Asgaard. Nótt takes her new job very seriously, though she does miss riding across the night sky. This important job was given to her son Dagr, who now cares for both day and night.
(She is based heavily off of Nótt from Norse mythology, but she is still a character that I take creative license with. Nótt became one of my characters after making her in the Elder Scrolls series.)
