Little girl, 'ave you ever heard the story of the bird who lost its voice? Said the kind old man to his granddaughter. The little girl shook her head, wide childish eyes shining with curiosity.

No grandfather, I have not. The girl replied politely, for her mother had taught her well to respect her elders. The kind old man smiled, the wrinkles around his aged eyes creasing at the sight of the lass's intrigue.

Vould you like to hear this story? I warn you now, it is sad story, but it can ‘ave a happy ending. The kind old man said. His granddaughter nodded eagerly and the man chuckled.

Vell then, I shall tell you a story of long ago. The elderly man said as he sat carefully down upon his rickety wooden rocking chair which creaked loudly under his weight. He lit an antique pipe and blew out a few smoke rings before beginning.

Once upon a time in a land far far away, before I vas born and certainly before you, there vas a kingdom ruled by a kind emperor. The emperor loved and treasured beautiful things and he sought out the most unique objects in his kingdom. He had lavish paintings from foreign lands covering the valls of his chambers vhile golden ornaments and the finest silk adorned him from head to toe. For a while, he vas satisfied.

One day, the emperor learned that one of most beautiful things in his kingdom vas the song of a certain bird called a nightingale and he sought to obtain this creature. He commanded the nightingale be brought to him, but his soldiers could not find this bird and the emperor grew distraught at this failure. A kitchen maid heard of her emperor's distress and told the emperor that she knew the whereabouts of nightingale, so she lead the court to the forest where bird could be found. And lo and behold, just as the maid had said, the nightingale vas there. The maid and emperor's court pleaded for the nightingale to return with them to the kingdom so that the emperor could enjoy his songs and the nightingale agreed to appear at the court.

When the emperor heard the nightingale's song, he was so captivated by the bird's song that he kept the nightingale in a gilded cage adorned with the land's finest jewels. Every day, the nightingale would sing for the emperor and then ask when he could return to his forest, but the emperor denied his pleas to be set free. The nightingale became saddened at his loss of freedom and his voice began to decay because of his sorrow. The emperor pleaded to the nightingale to recover and sing for him again, but the bird refused.

Then a traveling merchant passed through the kingdom and after hearing of emperor's plight, brought forth a beautiful bejeweled golden mechanical bird. By just winding it up, the automaton sang some of most beautiful songs that the emperor had ever heard and he was delighted by this new object. He was so in love with automaton that he lost interest in the real nightingale and forgot about him. The kitchen maid, the same one who had found the nightingale, set the bird free and the nightingale returned to forest.

But gold tarnishes with time and even most beautiful of jewels begin to lose their shine. And just as rust finds its way to metal and covers its worth, so too did that little automaton wore out and sing no more. The emperor once again grew distraught and wished for nightingale to return, but no matter vhere he searched, he could not find the nightingale.

Years later, the emperor became deathly ill and bedridden. Every breath he took was raspy and summoned Death closer to his bed. Vhen Death was beside the emperor, ready to strike and take him to the afterlife, who should appear but nightingale himself! The nightingale, upon hearing of the emperor's condition, returned to the castle. He perched on one ornate bedpost and looked upon Death fearlessly with his beady eyes and opened beak and began to sing. Death, so taken and moved by the nightingale's song departed from the emperor's side and emperor became healthy again. He joyfully welcomed the nightingale back and swore that the bird was free to come and go as he pleased. The nightingale forgave the emperor and for the rest of his life sang to him about the happenings of the kingdom so that the emperor would become known as wisest emperor in all of history.

The elderly man sat back, his pipe puffing out wispy smoke rings as his granddaughter scrunched her nose in confusion.

But grandfather, The little girl said, her voice hesitant. You said that this would be a sad story. It ended rather well, if you ask me.

The old man laughed. Yes, it ended vell for emperor and nightingale, he replied before leaning forward so that his face was level with his granddaughter's. But you see, nobody ever asked the question, what happened to mechanical bird?

The little girl's eyes widened in realization, for nothing in the story had told of the automaton's fate.

Do you know what happened, grandfather? The little girl asked. The man nodded slowly before reaching into the pocket of his trousers and pulled out a carefully wrapped object.

I don't, He replied before unwrapping the small package slowly, the paper crinkling under his gnarled fingers. He gently grasped his granddaughter’s hand and pressed the object into the small palm before pulling away. But I did say it could 'ave happy ending, ya?

The little girl's eyes widened in wonder, for resting in his palm was a mechanical bird. It looked like it had once been gold, but now had become tarnished into bronze from age. Small holes pierced the metal body as if there had been objects adorning it, but they had fallen out as the years gone by. A wind-up key was plugged into its back, the metal smudged by the many fingers that had once twisted it.

The little girl looked up at her grandfather, wonder brimming from her eyes. The elderly man only smiled before laying his fingers on the wind-up key and twisted it. Out from the bird came the most beautiful of songs and the young girl smiled in joy.
