What he took away was wrath, and what she took away was regret. Her heart was steady, so the regret for what she had lost never consumed her. But though she withstood the erosion of her self, she could never fully conquer it.

Over time, longing grew to ride beside the regret in her mind. Some days she felt she longed for the way things had been; some days, more and more often, she longed simply for him, even if it meant accepting what he had become.
