When he turned three the women were noticing strange things, he had not spoken a word in the few months he had been with them. They presumed because he was still adjusting to the idea that his father was gone, but he also seemed to ignore them. When they called his name or rang the bell for a meal he never responded unless another child got his attention. An appointment with a doctor would confirm that the young boy was deaf (and for this reason more than likely mute). As he grew, and while others were focusing on their speech, Chance took a bit more time to study on his writing skills and could write quite clearly and nicely by the time he was five. One of the nuns trained to work with children with such disabilities did teach him sign language, but because most of the other children did not know the language and were learning to read he choose to use notes for their benefit and ease. To make sure he always had a way to communicate with an individual that did not use sign language he kept a small pack with him with plenty of notepads, pencils and pens.
He was nine when he was adopted by the Hammonds, a slightly older married couple who had not been able to have children of their own but decided as they were getting older did not want to deal with a baby. The nuns had begun to worry that a deaf child would be hard to place but luckily for Chance, Mrs. Hammond was deaf and had been from birth and immediately the two bonded. When he arrived at his new home it was already tailored for his needs with lights to signal for the door and phones, a couple of hearing dogs (including a young Shepard named Rocky that had been purchased just for Chance as a welcome gift) and other arrangements. So it was that he became Chance Jethro Hammond dropping his birth father's last name for that of his new parents. Mrs. Hammond would help him settle into public school, learn new hobbies and teach him how to lip read which he mastered by the age of thirteen.
Now at nineteen he has moved out of his parent's house and into a small apartment in the city closer to the local art college where he is studying. After going through a few years of crossdressing and colorful hair dying he's finally grown out of the phase, allowing his naturally red hair to grow out. The frills and colorful garments of his youth exchanged for the more casual trousers and tops.. though he is still prone to wearing the occasional vibrant pink or purple.
