The Egg Pokémon. Chansey are most well-known for their eggs; they lay them frequently, at least once a day, after which it will carry the egg in a pouch on its stomach. The eggs are both extremely nutritious and so delicious that even the pickiest eaters and people who have lost their appetites due to illness will eagerly consume them. When wild, Chansey will share these eggs with any ill or injured Pokémon they encounter, nursing them back to health. Trained Chansey will continue this behaviour and extend it to humans as well; for this reason, Chansey are very popular companions for medical practitioners and are often seen in Pokémon Centers.

Another defining characteristic of Chansey is their rarity. They have never been observed in the Hoenn or Kalos regions, and in the other regions they only exist in small numbers in few areas; the Kanto region's Safari Zone is famous for hosting some of the largest Chansey populations known. The difficulty ascribed to catching a Chansey has caused them to be associated with luck and happiness, as it is widely believed that a trainer who catches one has been blessed. Chansey are also loving, gentle Pokémon who are likely to bring happiness to any trainer who chooses to raise one. Researchers in the Sinnoh region discovered that the baby Pokémon known as Happiny evolves into Chansey when levelled up with an Oval Stone during daylight hours, and a Chansey can further evolve into Blissey when it develops a strong enough bond with its trainer.

Chansey are more frequently raised as companions and healers than for battling as their attacking abilities are quite poor, but both Chansey and its evolution Blissey are deceptively tough against special attacks, giving them a niche popularity with battlers. They frequently use their eggs in combat, both as weapons and as healing items.
